I don't really think the US will hold much sway on Turkey's decisions on its own doorstep

it's all politics, i doubt it very much that something will happen... it's the same as always, the big fish gets to have a bigger share of the cake while the small gets nothing..

I think that the threats made by Turkey are pretty worrying. They have tried to stop this via legal means now they have failed they are throwing their weight around.

Interesting times ahead.

This is just exploratory drilling. Not much will happen unless a commercial deposit is found. Then Turkey may well interupt any activities to do with rig building.

ROC and Russia seem to depend on the "Law of the Sea", whatever relevance that is I don't know. On the other hand Turkey depends on "International Law", also a slippery one since it depends so much on conventions, custom, treaties and UN statements.

The main contention here seems to be about the non sharing of any finds by the G/Cs. If only the G/C's would consider that then some agreement could be reached. Likelyhood ? Probably nil !

To be fair, the GC minister involved in this has said there has never been any intention of cutting the TCs out of the profits. Quite how that would work out may be another story.

there is no advantage for turkey to open fire on the noble energy rigs

which will be working off the south-east of the island away from us,

...but they will of course make a strong physical presence in the area

put it this way:

the gc's have strong legal backing for this exploration even though as

viewed from turkey/trnc it is seen as highly provocative BECAUSE there

is no demarcation agreement with a still-blockaded trnc ...or turkey

on the other hand if the gc regime thinks it coulld get away with doing

this offshore to the trnc "sometime" in the future, it will be chancing it

well that's my guess anyway

Poor, bankrupt Greece trying all ways of trying to get money, even illegally.

Turkey is so needed for the "West"to control the Middle East.If Turkey can tell Israel to "p*ss off",it will flex it's muscle against any country.!!!

Well done Turkey !!

It is over 20 years since I first visited Turkey on holiday, then it was 18,000 old Turkish Lira for a pound.

Turkey fall out with their own allies Israel.

Could this be a basis for WW3

for all its cant about freedom and the grotesque syrian regime

what western leaders most fear is chaos:

ie failed states controlled by powerful armed gangs

for all their perceived faults, mubarak, israel and assad's syria

did seem to offer the hope of stability until this year

...just like europe's "balance of terror" in the cold war era

The fall out that Turkey have had with Israel gives them (Turkey) the perfect excuse to build up sea patrols between the Jewish state and the divided island of Cyprus,

israel's nine enemies back in may 1948 had the latest weaponry of world war II

both in 1967 and 1973 it faced combined arab armies as big as turkey's military

nonetheless turkey is formidable and combat experienced, although israel is a

nuclear state

the turkish government keen to establish its leading role in the region and the

muslim world but I am not convinced that war is a logical choice although do

expect some jostling and ugly confrontations

the a.k. will not want to spook its "constituency" of provincial business people

to put it very bluntly, turkey a proud country has been snubbed by the leaders

of the eu ...as well as pipsqueak south cyprus with its new best friend israel

anyone in the east med who continues to act with stubborness/resolution etc

is going to have to put up with the fallout from that

the americans must be having kittens: like they did when greek and turkish

warplanes played "chicken" over the aegean sea years ago

And that was merely over a miserable little rock [Kardak], which both countries claim belongs to them!

If Turkey 'gets into bed' with Iran, who have just recently proudly announced that they have brought a nuclear power station online, this means they have nuclear fission technology. The question now is: would Israel dare to call their bluff by threatening a nuclear strike?

I can no more speak for the circumstances israel may use its battery of "jericho II" nuclear missiles

than george galloway mp could accept the surrender of iraq on behalf of sadaam hussein

israel has suggested it would only consider use of this arsenal as a last ditch defence, or nbc attack

turkey has been very shrewd, for many reasons, in asking the russians to take total control of the

projected reactor sceme near mersin

regarding iran a very great deal indeed hinges on their continued long-term liasion with damascus
