I am moving out to North Cyprus next week and I am thinking of paying a company to provide me with an IP address in the Uk so I can pick up BBC iplayer when I came out. It will cost £70 a year, anyone done this and if so any comments.

I used Cloaker for a year before Nethouse provided a free UK VPN and had no problems with it.

Moxie yes it will eat up some of your 4GB of usage, if you stream it or if you download it.

For downloading from a site like the BBC it will tell you how 'big' the given program is for download. The only issue is converting the size quoted to your allowance of 4GB.

So for example on iplayer at the moment the latest episode of 'Dragons Den' (ep 4) in normal not high definition quality for download via iplayer is listed as being 640MB. There are 1024 MB in 1 GB. You can call it 1000 for easy of calculation. So this espiode would be using approx .64 of a GB vs the 4GB you have each month. So 6 such epsiodes would use up nearly all of your 4GB ( 6*.64 = 3.84GB)

None of the two mobile phone operators have an unlimited 3g data service as far as I know.

The 'size' data wise of content will be different if you stream it vs if you download it. With download you know up front what the size of a given download will be. With streaming it is not so clear. Streaming often offers variable quality that changes depending on how your internet connection is behaving, lower quality when the connection is 'slow' and increasing it when it is 'fast'. For these reasons knowing ahead of time how much data will be used from a streaming service can be difficult. It will be in a similar ball park to the downloaded version, less if you specificaly select 'lower bandwith' version on something like iplayer, but it is not simple to know exactly how much data a given stream will actually use (unlike with download where it is explicitly stated and fixed).

moxie maybe the mobile phone companies do offer an unlimited data service, you would have to check with them. KKTCELL website does nto show one here

To try and explain the difference between

downloading a TV program from say iplayer

streaming a program

live streaming a program

With downloading you transfer the entire program to your computer before you can start watching it. The size will be a fixed amount of data. It does not matter how slow your internet connection is as far as watching the content, because it will first all be brought to your computer. THe speed of your connection will affect how long this takes but once it is downloaded it is all there and so there will be no interuption.

Streaming is where you click on a program and it starts playing almost immediately. Here you start watching the content as it is being delivered to your computer. This needs a certain minimum [cont]

speed from your connection, such that it can recive the necessary data quicker than you are consuming it (watching it). If your connection is not fast enough then the prgoram will stutter and stall as it waits for the download to catch up again. With this kind of viewing it is much harder to know ahead of time exactly how much dat will be sent.

Live streaming is like the above but reffers to when you watch something via streaming as it is actualy being broadcast by other means. I watch the F1 coverage via BBC live streaming, which means I watch it as it is happening in the real world give or take a minute or two.

In summary with downloading you can know before hand exactly how much data will be used. With streaming, be it of an 'old' TV program or of one that is being shown at that time in the UK on BBC, you can not easily know exactly how much data it will use.

I hope this makes sense ?

I'll try an analogy. It might help, it might not.

Imagine the TV content is water. Imagine watching the content is drinking. Imagine you want to drink a liter of water. Downloading would be where you pipe the whole liter of water from the source (BBC) into a container (your hard drive) and only once the full liter is with you, do you start drinking it. How fast the water is pumped determins how long it takes to get the liter to you, but once you have it you can drink it as fast as you like. Streaming would be where you drink from the end of the pipe as it is pumped to you from the source. If it comes slower than than the rate you want to drink it, then there is nothing to do but wait in these 'pauses' as it tries and fails to keep up with the rate you are drinking it. You can only drink it as fast as it can be sent. That is the difference between downloading and streaming.

I might have just confused things even more. Sorry if I have.

Message 22 - Mrs Snakes, you need to call nethouse techinical for them to "open" it on your account. I have been using this for approx 12 months and I find it a bit up and down. 6m's provides a free one which I use for back up but i am hearing very good things about ex-pat shield. There you go a choice of three and all free!!!!
