UK passport renewal within six months of expiry date and you'll be credited with the outstanding time balance on top of the ten years.

British high commission in Cyprus stops passport processing

The British High Commission has announced that from 1 September 2011, it will no longer operate a check and send facility for passport applicants. Customers living in the Republic of Cyprus should send their applications directly to the Regional Passport Processing Centre in Madrid.

The High Commission’s Vice-Consul, Christina Smith said that “Sending applications directly to Madrid will provide customers with flexibility, allowing them to send applications at a time convenient to them and without having to come into Nicosia”. She added that customers were recommended to send their application directly to Madrid by secure means such as a reputable courier.

Whilst making clear that the High Commission is unable to recommend a specific courier, the Vice Consul confirmed that it has previously used DHL, who can be contacted on +357 77777345. Customers can inform DHL that they wish to send a British Passport Application

to the British Embassy in Madrid for processing. DHL will be able provide information on the cost of the courier. Applicants can send up to 4 applications in one package, however passports will be returned individually and there will be a separate shipping fee for each passport.

Passport applications should be sent to:-

UK Regional Passport Processing Centre

British Consulate-General Madrid

Torre Espacio

Paseo de la Castellana 259D

28046 Madrid

Applicants should ensure that they continue to leave at least 4 weeks for the process to be completed.

I can't believe this especially when I rang the UK and asked if I could renew a passport via post and the answer was NO you had to be in the country at the time. It was stated if you were abroad and wanted a UK passport the whole point of the High Commissioner was so you were seen! And if a friend posted it in the UK for you while you were not there this was a security breach. Sounds like it.

In this time of increased vigilance re passport fraud and terrorism this does seem an odd stance for the UK Passport authorities to adopt. Not requiring one to appear in person seems almost 'cavalier'!

From 25 July 2011, the Regional Passport Processing Centre in Madrid will accept passport applications directly from customers living in north Cyprus. This will enable British nationals to apply for their passport without having to visit Shakespeare Avenue in Nicosia. Customers may still visit Shakespeare Avenue to apply for their passport if they wish. (See the UK in Cyprus website for contact details).
