……from the expat community in aid of Help Those With Cancer Association/Tulips in the last 3 months! On behalf of the Association, I would like to say a big ‘THANK YOU!’ to everyone who has supported us from the public who attend our events and buy our raffle tickets, to the performers who support us for free and to the sponsors who are always generous with their prizes This is an absolutely fantastic achievement but we now are encountering a slight problem, I can here you all groaning but please bear with me and read the following, this is so important. Most of us, if not all, know someone who has had cancer, and in the TRNC alone there are approx. 15 new cases per week of which AT LEAST one of them is an ex-pat. The Association’s founder will not discriminate against any nationality and will continue to assist ex-pats as much as possible however over the last 3 months the Association has paid out in excess of 130,000TL on cancer care for ex-

It also needs a minimum of 100,000TL a month to run. A new initiative has been launched, the first in the TRNC, to the ex-pats to encourage you to pay a monthly fee (just as you maybe would in UK to Oxfam, Barnardo’s etc), via standing order, to help the Association to continue to help us and help balance the figures. It can be as little as 5 or 10TL to as much as you can comfortably afford. You will find details in the following banks in the Girne area: Asbank Creditwest Garanti HSBC Iktisatbank Kibris Turk Ogretmenler Limasol Turk Kooperatif Seker Bank Turk Bank Turkiye Is Bank Universal Other outlets will be announced later. If I could put it another way, could you give up the price of ONE drink per month? That is the minimum we are asking for. Please find it in your hearts to support this initiative. Help us to help someone with cancer, it could be you!

Thanks you TurkBankRep for posting your support and thank you blade for your encouragement. We really hope that this initiative takes off. We need all of your help. We all know someone who has been touched by Cancer. It could be any of us. Thanks for your continuing support and all that you have done to help us achieve what we have so far. Carole

Carole, can i please ask do you do any work regarding prevention of cancer? My uncle has recently had cancer treatment in the UK, initially they thought it was skin cancer but had gone deeper into his ear. He is in a bad way now with removal of part of his ear, an eye op and even with radiotherapy treatment we have little hope he will recover. But this could maybe have been prevented ,maybe by a better education of cancer? We know a lot more now than we did years ago. So many people here lay by a pool during the summer never considering what that may later contribute to. Maybe a promotional aspect would be a good idea as prevention is alwys better than cure.?

Hi Blade, Many thanks for your positive feedback above, it is always welcome! Carole and I work together as volunteers for the Association, so for the moment I will answer for both of us. The Association is looking at ways to highlight and work toward preventative measures but unfortunately it can only do so much with it's limited resources, as we have tried to highlight, there are so many people now being diagnosed with cancer, it is quite staggering and this uses up a lot of the Associations income. They have already purchased a mobile mammogram unit to get to the outer areas of the island and are trying to look forward. We will take your thoughts to the Association and put the suggestion forward as I personally think it is a fantastic idea to highlight throughout the season the disadvantages of continuously sunbathing. If you have anything further you would like to put forward please either post on here or use our email address: tulipscarole@yahoo.com Thank y

Hi Blade Sue has responded to your questions and I echo her remarks. Awareness and education about ways to reduce the risks of cancer are critical to trying to combat this dreadful disease. We work together to try and get articles in the press and through other media to get the message out. We will take your suggestions to the Association and push to have awareness raised as high as we can get it. Thanks again for your feedback. Carole

Well done to everyone who helped raise the 65,000TL. I can't believe the difference in what you raised and what has been spent on the ex-pats! I for one are off to the bank tomorrow for the cause! John

Thanks Redwine, it is very good of you to include this on your site! What we are asking is 'CAN YOU AFFORD TO GIVE UP ONE DRINK A MONTH?' If everyone gave 5TL (min), it would soon mount up and the Association would be so much better off. Sue
