The Cloggies' national football team* (Vice World Champion) has taken Number One position on the FIFA World Ranking List for the first time in history. England is (only) ranking number 4. * From Cloggieland, aka Holland or The Netherlands, the tiny country many times smaller than the mighty UK... ▶ [ http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking/lastranking/gender=m/fullranking.html ].

I remembered the C44 motto when I wrote message 1: "If it's upright, cut it down. If it's down, stamp it flat..." So I'm now awaiting the (un)funny replies...

Msg 1 & 2 are probably considered by some here an anti-Brit signal. They are not. Just couldn't resist.

@ msg 4, stockiefan: Come back to this thread and DO read msg 5. It's true. P.S. I estimate there are only 1000 cricket players in the whole of "Cloggiesland"... More than 16 million inhabitants...

Remember this team Hans. I used to watch them in the early 70's Johan Cruijff, Heinz Stuy, Wim Suurbier, Barry Hulshoff, Horst Blankenburg, Ruud Krol, Arie Haan, Johan Neeskens, Gerrie Mühren, Sjaak Swart, Johan Cruijff, Piet Keizer. Who was the other side??? Oh Feyenoord...

@ msg 7: I do remember! Two of them "wrote columns" for the paper I used to work for. Only one German in the team, most of the players from Amsterdam. Nowadays the Ajax players can't understand their fellow team members nor people from the audience. And the best players from my country play abroad... Progress in sports I suppose... :-(

I met Paul Gascoigne twice he has his problems but he is down to earth and great with the fans. A young lad asked him for his autograph but had no paper to write it on so Paul pulled his wallet out and signed a £20 note, thats when the queue started he signed every note in his wallet

Hans me old Dutch; I think you need to rethink the "VICE WORLD CHAMPIONS" line unless you are referring to Amsterdams red light district in which case it's ok. In the home of football a team that is described as 'Cloggers' are considered to be a bit on the dirty side, think Leeds and Arsenal in the sixties. Then again given the disgraceful Dutch antics in the world cup final? Hows about that wonderful Ajax performance against triple V Venlo?

Hans; You should have won in 1974 and 1978, you didn't manage it in 2010. At least the home of football managed it in 1966.

The next history lesson may well be about the last time a team from Holland did anything in Europe. Seems like ages ago. Also can someone explain England's ridiculously high ranking, (7th at best) and just how it is that the reigning European and world champions are suddenly not at number one.

(...) ▶ Newscoop, why don't you ask Rev Walker? Some in TRNC seem to think he's a (quiz-)expert (i.e. with some help from this real expert, the retired referee Phil Lucock...). |

Good to see our Hans posting something 'TRNC' related ... ;) Hans - a bit like grid positions in F1 - it's the cup final that counts... hoping your ranking will be reflected in your guys actually holding the cup.... ( and certainly playing more cleanly that in the last final)

Newscoop, now that the annoying Northern Irishman entered this thread I prefer to further discuss our "football differences" while drinking a nice glass of draught Efes in a TRNC bar. I won't mention the bar's name because the annoying Northern Irishman may try to close* another TRNC business, this time a TRNC bar. See you there! * His obsession and specialty.

Hi Hans, you are SO 'right' I've often tried to get 'TRNC' biz' such as those run by Iceman or Elko's 'closed down' ;)))

Having given the football world superb entertaining eye opening interpretations of the beautiful game since the 70s' - resorted to clinical rubbish in the World Cup, usually reserved for second rate Italian or Argentinian dross. From the European 'Brazil' to Troll XI in one competition. Was it worth it?

Oddly enough the reason the Cloggies overtook Spain was because the game at Wembley was cancelled thanks to the riots, which meant that on the night Spain lost in Italy the Dutch did not have to protect their accumulated points. Otherwise if the game had gone ahead the Dutch would have needed to win at fortress Wembley to attain top spot. Which in all honesty they probably would have done, but we'll never know.
