If you are on Facebook: check the URL! If you see the URL start with http://etc you are NOT in a safe session and hackers have a fine chance to hack into your account. You SHOULD see the URL begin with https://etc

Find "Safe browsing" and tick the box. (In your Account on the right of the screen).

Lilli you must be getting so very good at all of this you will have to come round and sort mine out lol.

On my trip back home a friend of mine took a good look at my laptop and sorted everything out for me..apparently its all very safe and secure let the buggers try hacking what I have now I have a feeling that now I have something that very few here have even heard of...And I can assure you will not even get the chance to see either

I understood and followed the instructions in message 1, thank you.

I do not understand message 3 and 7. How do you check if you have been hacked and what has a telephone number got to do with it ?

I am not sure anyone but Lilli understands the manchester number hacking but as an add on to Hans information, if you play some games such as zynga poker and I assume others like farmville, you will need to come off the secure connection, facebook will tell you to accept this if you choose to however you must check that you are back on the secure connection when you go back to the main facebook site, it does not suggest this to you. Just double check to avoid the insecure connection.

Sorry Hans, just an expansion on your sound advice for the non techy's

@ msg 13, proger1: I'm a very limited user of Facebook and never play games (only chess on line via special sites) - so any addition about possible holes in the Facebook software is most welcome of course.

And while we're at "safety": If you connect to a financial site (your bank for instance) ALWAYS check there's a little yellow lock on the right side of the URL window (the location of the lock may differ, depending on the browser you use). If it's NOT there you may have been redirected to a faked though often detailed "home page", convincingly suggesting you're communicating with your bank. In such a case your log-in and other information may be stolen and your account may be plundered.

Folks using UK online banking should use Trusteer Rapport software - if recommended

Can someone please help, I have followed Han's instructions but I'm worried that I may have been hacked. How do you do the checks as carried out in message 3 and 7, I still don't get what UK phone numbers have to do with it as we are getting Internet via a dongle.

My bank will not allow me to connect if Trusteer Rapport is not running.

@ msg 19, GinaC: Sorry, I do not understand msg 3 and 7 either. Maybe Lillie can give more details (without giving any personal information or full phone numbers!)?

Funny... only yesterday evening my wife logged out of her FB account, and when tried to log in back, it said the account's passwd has been changed at 11:51am. She couldn't access her email account as well, the one associated with the FB account.

Even if the hacker, or who ever hacked her account, the thing i wasn't able to understand is, how was she able to continue using her FB account all the way into the evening till almost 9 pm.

Now we r stuck.
