Denktaş who had been paralyzed on his left side due to the stroke had been receiving physical rehabilitation treatment at the military hospital since the 8th of July.

His son, the leader of the Democrat Party, Serdar Denktaş told reporters that his father was awake and fully conscious.

He said that he seen and spoken to him this morning.

Doctors are expected to operate on Mr. Denktaş to relieve a build up of blood caused by the hemorrhaging in his brain.

Hope the old boy makes a full recovery. Without him the greeks would have decimated the turks. But people have short memories.

He is 87! I do not think he will last further surgeries...

As for "bertieboss" said - as a Cypriot who lived through all the wars, ended up a refugee, carried sand bags on his back at the age of 9, spent a youth in fear for his family rather than himself, and got acquainted with the sounds of heavy machine gun and mortar fire so well that he could tell the difference between an A4, A6 and a Brengun when they blasted away - I have no memories of Denktash protecting any of us from "decimation"! In fact he and his family were outside the country during 1963 and 1974 wars!

I have no wish to show disrespect to a dying old leader, but please do not insult the intelligence of TCs by such comments. Had you said our true leader during the dark days - Doktor Küçük, and many unnamed heroes who fought for their families using any old gun including shotguns, before we managed to create safe enclaves for ourselves, I would have agreed with you - but Denktaş?

Yes you are right - the country is so much improved without him.

But I do know how things were pre 74.
