The meeting of the two leaders yesterday indicates nothing on the horizon which gives even a glimmer of hope that the ongoing UN lead negotiations will reach a substantive result.

According to most reports, Tuesday’s meeting did not produce anything new on the chapter of Governance and distribution of powers.

It appears that the two sides remain fixed to their previous positions. The special advisors George Iacovou and Kudret Ozersay will make an attempt this afternoon to bridge differences, although this appears to be a difficult task.

It’s reported that before yesterday’s meeting started, Dervis Eroglu requested that a time frame should be placed in order to be decided if a solution can be found or not.

He added that either these talks will end in agreement, or as he personally sees things, the UNSG will announce that the mission of good offices cannot continue.

Mr. Eroglu accused the Greek Cypriot side of playing with time and trying to “go back on things agreed”.

The meeting was partly devoted to the question of Cyprus’ exploration for hydrocarbons, with President Christofias raising the issue of threats uttered against the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey and the recent statements made by Mr. Ozersay on the subject.

Christofias stressed that surely these are not helping the efforts to find a solution and are not in line with the request of the UNSG, in view of the critical meeting in October.

Eroglu repeated that the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone is a flagrant violation of the sovereign rights of TCs and undermining of the goal for the joint planning for a reunited Cyprus.

According to Politis’ information the UN officials present refrained from getting involved in this discussion.

Lisa Buttenheim stated after the talks that the two leaders will meet again on Friday to discuss the remaining subjects.
