İ have been using AVG software on a free 30 day trial. This used to be freely downloadable but now they charge after trial period.

Can anyone recommend a free downloadable reliable program that they use? Or should İ bite the bullet and pay up?

Many thanks

This is 'news' to me :

Sorry, but you've clearly downloaded the TRIAL version - not the free version... hardly surprising .. the WANT to to pay ... and the route to get to the free version is full of confusion.. hence my 'direct' link..

Suggest you 'uninstall' the trial version, having first downloaded the free version - THEN be sure to update and run a full scan.

Downloaded it for someone yesterday.. STILL free..

@ Redwine... we have used the free versions of AVG on 3 pcs for 4.5 years... No Virus issues or issues of any sort.. I certainly don't think it is buggier than Avast or any other freebie virus prog..

padisha AVG still offer a free product for 'home' use. It does not have the full feature set of the paid for product but does offer good basic protection imo.

You can download the free version from here

http://free.avg.com/gb-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free

make sure you choose the 'free' version and not the paid for or trial. It will also during the install encourage you to go for the paid version, but as long as you stick toyour guns and keep selecting the free version you will be fine.

There are of course other free virus software out there. Avast has a free option I think. There are others as well. Personaly I use AVG free and have been for a number of years and its been good enough for me. Others will have diffeent views on which virus checker to use and free vs paid.

I had AVG for several years and found it very good, like most freebies its only the basic model but does the job and like most virus checkers can sometimes slow your machine down.

Ive only changed from AVG because my son works for a famous anti virus company as a senior software analyst and we get our copy free.

Many thanks for your replies and advice. Have stayed with AVG, having downloaded the FREE version! They certainly do try to steer you towards the Trial version, dont they?

Again, many thanks to you all.

Microsoft Security Essentials is the best. Have been using it for over a year now. It is unobtrusive and will automatically update definitions, will also scan your pc when you are not actively using it. Best thing is it is free.

So sick of AVG, uses so much resource, and slowed me down considerably.

Couldn't uninstall it, tried to reinstall itself, but I found an AVG uninstall tool, ran it and it worked. Now trying AVIRA, I will see how that goes.

The problem with MSE was that it uses a piece of software during the update called wuauclt.exe, and this used up all my resource and froze my laptop.
