We have given up on hiring quad bikes for our son and his friend, for our October holiday, as we respect everyones views that they can be a tad unsociable, so we are now enquiring about donkey rides or hiring out for mountain exploration? Any one know of a donkey or horse hirer and ccould you let us know if these animals need number plates for road use. Thankyou x

Very interesting thought bazzagirl. I have often thought that some form of "pony trecking" would be an appropriate enterprise in North Cyprus. There is a riding school in Catalkoy, but I think their horses are valuable animals and I doubt they would hire out for mountain riding. Worth asking though.

I dont know if anyone has trained donkey for riding but, I too, would be intersted if there are any.

Sadly I think you would need to be an expert rider to risk an equine on many of the roads now. Its had enough for small car drivers, cyclists and pedestrians

this is one of the things in my to do list @ Şinya - east side.

my place is very suitable for this but my budget is not enough to buy them, I hope I can manage to do that in the near future. a few pony will also make children holidays more excited.

There is also the tractor Safari starting from Dipkarpaz. On the way we often meet Tassos the goatherd, who rides a donkey and will let people have a go riding it. Its usually near a little secluded beach, that we meet him, where we also have our lunch.

See pictures here and if you want to know more, call Eva on 0533 820 6798

bazzagirl, we did this a few years back, however due to the fact that one of our donkeys had its leg eaten by a certain individual on the forum, and a huge outcry, on the forum, we had to put the business on hold.

I'm really not sure i should divulge the culprit as it caused mayhem here on the forum. the story is that a certain member of the forum hired one of our donkeys, we never go it back..however when we found it one of its rear legs was missing.

The said man, has since refused to comment on the topic, needless to say both wackyjim and i were astonished and sickened when we found out what had happened to one of our donkeys.

Last time I rode a donkey I was about 8 years old on Scarborough beach.

There is a maximum size now due to the poor donkeys being over burdened.

Leave them poor donkeys alone and get a bike or a decent sized horse, better still carry yourself ie. walk.

Jock, wackyjim,

Is it right that you used to be into "mountain " sheep, before you went "into" Donkeys?

As I recall, it was you two, that were legless, NOT the donkey!

Its no wonder people are leaving Cyprus 44 in droves, allowing such utterly false accusations to be

voiced. Like the poor Donkey, I am hopping mad!

Now now Wyn,

You know it was you who caused the trouble with the donkey, you said the Lady Wyn was going to walk and carry the cases but your kind heart wouldn't let you do that, but to expect her to carry the donkey, well, what can we say.

Both of them were last seen tied up outside the Ship hotel, I just hope the dear lady has fared better than the donkey.

If you are really serious Bazza girl please change your mind. Donkeys are tiny little creatures that are just not capable of bearing the weight of a grown adult. I've seen them being used and abused all over the world and the only way it'll stop is if we use our God given compassion and keep them for the children and light loads.

Cars struggle to get up those mountains, so what would donkeys be like?

Any civilised human being with a modicum of intelligence would not subject a little donkey to such hardship and anyone who does, or even contemplates doing so, should be thoroughly and utterly ashamed of themselves - the same goes for those who would use a donkey for such 'tourist business'.

It's sickening beyond belief - such people are detestable - beyond contempt!

Yes this isnt fair Bazzagirl - You try to be ecologically sound (and good for you so few people do) and you get told off for cruelty.

Donkeys are traditonally beast of burden (didnt someone once ride one to Jerusulem?) and come in different breeds and sizes. The feral donkeys I have seen in the Karpas looked quite large enough for an healthy weight adult rider. Mind you I have seen some men around the bars here who would need a carthorse to carry them.

English seaside donkeys are chosen to be small to carrry small children - obviously there must be a weight limit or adults or large teenagers would be too much for them,.

Make sure any animal you hire is a decent size, not too skinny and its coat is thick and healthy with sores or bad scars and the harness is soft and does not rub, and that it gets the right amout of rest, foood and water. If it has a good and responsible owner it will probably be better off than running wild.

Donkeys are probably better for mountain terrain than horses, as the latter have such delicate legs, easily broken.

Long term pony trekking something like an Exmoor Ponywould be ideal, but they come expensive. Mules - stronger than donkey - have to be bred and are even more difficult to control.

Provided, and it is a big provided, they are cared for and not overworked what is wrong with using a natural resource that is otherwise a problem for farmers and a drain on resources to care for.

PS PLEASE NOTE ERROR IN MY PREVIOUS POST> third line from bottom shouldof course have read "no sores" etc.

Bizzilizzi, thankyou for your advice, of course me and the donkey would be well looked after, as i adore animals, but as some people have kicked up one of the local farmers has a gargatuan goat he said i could borrow for mountain trips he is very stealthy and knows the area well a more sure footed animal i could not ask for, seemingly he will take me to heights nother other animal could. So i think i will take him up on his offer, by the way i am a very small person.
