The headline in the Cyprus Today Newspaper stated. :-" BIG MAC? NOT IN THE NORTH " This Headline preceded " Injunctions on sale of Kulaksiz 5 villas refused"( relegated to page 5 !) Where the Hell is this paper coming from when Big Mac's take president over pensioners who are about to be evicted ! . This court ruling / eviction is potentially the WORST thing that has happened in the TRNC and Cyprus Today deem it only worth a page 5 mention? This "Newspaper" which is geared to inform and sell to, the EX Pat inhabitants of Northern Cyprus, have chosen to put, as headlines the refusal to allow BIG MAC, over the eviction of pensioners from homes they OWN AND HAVE PAID FOR IN FULL ! Why have they not taken up the challenge to Akfinans Bank and the government for allowing this travesty of justice to take place and why have they not CASTIGATED the Judge for his outrageous decision. You disgust me to. This is MORE than another nail in the TRNC COFFIN, this is Cremation of t

| I am sad that The Star (towhich I now contribute) could not publish anything about the K5 saga as our paper comes out on the same day as this awful decision was made. On a personal level, I just feel angry, sad, frustrated, plus a load of other things which I am not sure |I can spell. I am frustrated not just on a personal level but also on that of seeing what this country is doing to itself -shooting itself inthe foot - and what it is doing to those who come here to make a life and to support the place which much of the world denies exists. But newspapers have their own agendas, and maybe it is a political reason for CT to put the matter where it did, or maybe it was because the graphics had already been done and the decision was so totally unexpected. So many people thought there was only one humanitarian way to go on this, and we are all dumbfounded at the Judge's conclusion. So, maybe there is a reason as to why it did not make the front page it deserved. Why not ask Cyprus Tod |

Marion should know better; CT has to be ready to go to press on Friday, ergo the layout is predetermined. K5 decision was Friday lunchtime. Birdman; why not do as Marion says; write to CT.

Marion Very noble of you to offer reasons for the CT front page faux pas. While I still enjoy the contributions of the CT journalists (especially the guy with the cap of Tottenham persuasion), since The Star has separated the comic/social pictures from the main news it has become a much more creditable publication. Well done!

to newscoop - I was defending CT! I have no idea of the reason, but suspected it merely had space for a 'stop press' thing. I am sure it is difficult to hold the front page if you have no idea what the story will be. As I said, no chance for the Star. And in this place, i sometimes feel that 'freedom of the press' is not quite the same as in other countries - and for obvious reasons. and thanks ranger 5 But that is no credit to me, but i will pass on the 'well done'; to those who plan the paper. I have myown views on publications, but I am just a small time /small fry contributor - but still feel a loyalty, as I did to Cyprus Observer which just disappeared down a Media black hole in spac,e in spite of questions sent through cyberspace (e mails), so I am glad that people are finding The Star improved. but like most thing,s you can't please them all.

Maybe they do not want to publish on a front page something that could possibly reduce their readership in the long run ?

I am pretty sure in this instance PhilBailey that it was time. Whilst it is true that CT publishon their ownpremises (so I have bene told) they still have a tight deadline and to leave the front page is not on. Maybe they will do a follow up in their mid week edition if they feel it is merited, especially with the feelings of the victims of K5. I am not sure it would reduce their readership, but it could reduce people coming here to buy, but then it could have that effect if the article were on page 10. As to The Star, I have no idea, but of course by next Friday is a bit of 'history' unless the Editor wants to make a personal story out of it. But as this is a holiday week, we are going to press even earlier as The Star is printed in Turkey! of course, I would not midn collecting all your thoughts and feelings and putting it together in an article!!!! However, the main thrust now must be on tyring to get help for K5

All English-speaking TRNC newspapers, including the 'errant' Cyprus Observer are locally owned by wealthy people who, no doubt, are 'related/friendly/in debt' to those in government, banking, property development, estate agents, judiciary, legal advocacy etc prevailing in this state of nepotism. It figures, therefore, it is not in their interests to front page bad press for 'the system'. For whatever reason, editors appear to feel readers are more interested in 'social scene' reports rather than investigating real stories. Sadly, we buy the papers - hence this drivel is perpetuated and even the real stories are watered down/mis-reported/not published. As the adage states, "Hey ho, this is Cyprus my friend." For all this - the TRNC is still my preferred place of abode and I've lived in quite a few countries around the world.
