A friend of mine recently moved abroad and had to rehome his pet rottweiler of 4 years - Lady. The move was all very sudden and the move was made quickly. A friend of a friend said he would look after her and she was taken to her new home. I have been away for a week and upon returning decided to go see how Lady was getting on at her new home. I was heartbroken to see she is kept locked up in a TINY cage all day with a pile of her own feces, a bucket of GREEN water to drink, she was looking very skinny. Lady is ofcourse like all rottweilers protective, and intimidating, however over the years has had plenty of human interaction and is very sociallised. She can get used to a person in just one meeting. Im looking for a new home for her, someone who would be able to look after her properly. She is very obedient and if she is told to get in her cage she immediately does so.

Please, Responses ASAP, every minute is spent being abused and I cannot wait to find her a real home to move her t

Yasmin,

Is the person who has her now willing to give her up to you if you found her a new home?

I experienced something similar earlier this year with a dog and it was very hard to get the owner to give up the dog, he did eventually agree to give me the dog and we got it rehomed. Sadly he never recovered and had to be put to sleep.

So i know what your feeling right now. Good luck, i hope someone can offer her a home soon.

Yes what a very sad story cannot she be sent to join her original owner? It is horrible for you to have to deal with this when she was not even your dog, best of luck with finding her a home unfortunately we cannot have any more dogs.

I'd rather hear of a dog on the streets than be treated like this. Oh for the RSPCA in cases like this, they have the authority to enter peoples premises and take people to court. It makes me feel so angry and frustrated that we can do nothing about it.

thank you for the responses. I am now feeling slightly more hopeful. i will post pictures asap (as soon as i work out how)- sometime tonight.

as far as im concerned the new owner does not have a say in giving up the dog, he has not cared for the dog to the standard previously agreed. he did not pay for the dog and there were no contracts involved (apart from the verbal one which he has broken), and lady knows me better than him so no problem there.

yes, i am in contact with the origional owner however from australia theres not much he can do.

Babrew - Lady is about 4 years old, currently in kyrenia - karaoglanoglu. the family she grew up with spoke fluent english however her main commands are a few simple turkish key words (go inside, get out etc). she is a loving dog, territorial and protective, however gets used to new people quickly. will not leave the garden even if the gates are low she knows not to.

She's lost weight since going to the new owner but nothing a bit of TLC wont fix.

Thanks again for all the kind words and support. I just hope I find her a new home soon.

yes its a cypriot ofcourse, a farmer. normally we wouldnt have let this happen but the owner had to leave so suddenly we almost didnt find her a home at all. in hindsight that probably would have been a better outcome.

It may be a sweeping statement re Turkish owners, but in five years I've only met about 12 locals that I would let look after a dog. As for a turkish farmer - absolutely NOT. There are others of course who have "tiny" dogs as fashion statements and then get rid of them when they're bored. Heaven only knows where they end up??

She's a real looker eh ! , i'm sure there is someone out there for her and her for someone special out there , alas i wish it could be me . It must be quite expensive to keep her , perhaps that is the problem . I would be more than happy to help sponser her if the right person came along

If your friend gave Lady to this farmer, Lady is now the farmers it would seem. Even if he is treating her badly how are you going to go on to his property and get her with out it being seen as trespassing and thieft?

I really do hope you can get her as it is horrible when a dog is miss treated. Have you tried talking to the Farmer and asking him to give her to you. I would hate to see you get in to any trouble trying to help.

Lady was given to the farmer based on a certain agreement, hes not even feeding her properly, she gets a bit of dry loaf bread and thats it! He has more than violated our agreement of ownership, a verbal agreement is legally binding. unless you want to see it from a cyprus perspective of law means nothing, then i have no problem taking her anyway. From a ethical perspective again he doesnt have a leg to stand on. Thank you for your concern but there is no need to worry about me getting in trouble its nothing i cant handle, im not alone in any of this either. he can try telling me i dont have the right to take her he wont get very far. please lets just stay focused on finding a new home for her asap.

Have you thought of approaching The North Cyprus Society for the Protection of Animals based in Lefkosa? There was an article about them in Wednesday's "Cyprus Today". They, apparently, received 50,000 euros in EU funding eighteen months ago. Maybe they could help rehouse Lady.

i have good news for everyone, that maybe makes me look a bit silly. i went to visit Lady the other day and take her a nice bone and happened to meet the farmer while i was there (first time id met him). he was actually feeding the animals when i got there and the dogs were chowing down on a nice portion of dry dog food. i stayed and spoke with him for a while. he seemed to have a good relationship with her. he showed me where he keeps the lead that he uses to walk her and said that i was welcome to come and walk her or visit her whenever i like. she was completely tic free and seemed a lot happier than the first time id been to see her. i think i may have jumped to conclusions the first time i visited her, it seems the farmer does show adequate care and attention to all his animals and maybe i was being a bit prejudice. the farm she lives on is close to my house so i will be visiting her often to check she is happy and healthy.thank you so much everyone for all the care & support! x

Doubtless your age (19) accounts for your knee jerk reaction to Lady losing weight - instead of thinking through that dogs, like many animals, have emotions and feelings; she's probably suffering separation anxiety/pining - how can you explain to an animal that after 4 years, she was surplus to requirements? the rug was pulled from under her, with no time to acclimatise to a new owner and surroundings, she would just go to whomever, and live, however, whether she liked it or not! I am against rehoming for this reason, it oftentimes creates such emotionally damaged animals, it would have been better to put them to sleep. You might post an apology to the many Cypriots who are animal lovers - we know many...and they put a LOT of British dog owners to shame!!

i dont understand what point you are trying to make MsGarnet. I find it rather hypocritical for u to judge me for stereotyping cypriot dog owners when you are clearly stereotyping me by my age. yes i am 19, i am a dog lover. i am aware that dogs have emotions and feel seperation anxiety, that is why i went to visit her in the first place. any dog lover would have been worried by what i saw on the day i visited her, there was more to it than her looking skinny. i already admitted that i was being prejudice. I do apologise to any person whom was offended by any of my posts, i expect you will not be so big as to apologise to whom you have offended. i am well aware that lots of cypriots are dog lovers as i myself am cypriot. i am also well aware of the vast number of dogs on this island being abused. thank you for trying to educate me, you obviously are a dog lover yourself but theres no reason to be hostile towards people. i hope you can find some comfort in the fact that Lady is happy.

yasmin - unfortunately the written word doesn't allow for body language, voice inflection et cetera; I wasn't being derogatory, merely stating the obvious - age and experience usually (depending on the person) tells one there may be more to a situation than what appears on the surface, so to look further, before going 'public' on one's feelings. I salute you actually, at your age (and thought this at the time I first read this thread) being so spirited that you had every intention of taking this large animal away from what you perceived was an intolerable, cruel situation...whatever obstacles came your way in doing that...

I was not 'trying to educate you' you are clearly educated, and kindly, and your own person; your family should be proud of you - I am.
