“There was huge pressure from the European Court of Human Rights which has already ruled against Turkey,” said Orhan Kemal Cengiz a human rights activist and lawyer who specializes in minority issues."

Surprised this isn't Hot Topic at top of forum!!! This big U-turn, never seen before from Turkey, could mean the return of GC property in TRNC cominwg next. If TR can return seized property at home they can do it in Cyprus! Could be they tested the water and found it OK.

philbailey,

a step forward for some dwindling minorities in turkey at least their hopes

it is said that in the 1930's fully thirty percent of istanbul's population were

non-turks of one variety or another, sadly not now though (source, bbc)

so would it mean trouble in store for ex-pats?

very much doubt that, trying to link it to cyprus is really clutching at straws

(yet again)

though turkey may not be bothered much about "foreign property investors"

anything that harms them is still an affront to turkish pride and sovereignty

phil you really must try harder!

Phil,

it is certainly a step forward with regards to meeting human rights. However I suspect the main reason for taking this action is to thwart future possible court rulings against Turkey and the pressure from the European Court of Human Rights.

A year ago I would not have believed that Turkey would introduce a government decree returning assets that once belonged to Greek, Armenian or Jewish trusts and agree to pay compensation for any confiscated property that has since been sold on.

Will it effect Cyprus? Not whilst the IPC is in operation but when that finishes? Who knows? Could it have set a precedent? How will they respond from further ECHR pressure regarding GC property?

Perhaps the question that is best asked is do you trust Turkey to safeguard the property of foreign purchasers or will she act in her own best interest to maintain pride and sovereignty?
