Does anyone know if there are restrictions on food/meat products in TRNC?

We were looking to bring over some bacon/black pudding/steak etc. Has anyone ever done this? If so, how were they packed? Hand or hold luggage?

Thanks Linda

Same as above, get it vac packed.

I keep it cold, wrap it in paper of put it into a small coolbag and pop it into the suitcase.

I usually don't freeze it until I get back to the TRNC, I have always been concerned if it may thaw out a little on the way here!

You are not supposed to bring meat or meat products into the TRNC as in when coming from the south side surely must apply from the uk also.

Are you bonkers?

As the import of meat products is prohibited you are risking being put back on the next flight out having been declared persona non-grata and for what? What is your fall back plan if there are serious delays?

"never been stoped yet" There is always a first time...

Get a sense of proportion... nearly all these products are available here, what is it you simply can't live without that you risk breaking the import laws?

What's up with you all, we get our meat in south, pork cheap as chips (a joint 3.25 euro a kilo ) and very good quality, fillet steak 24 euro a kilo, pork chops 3.oo euro kilo etc all good quality meat and organic not like ASDA. Orphanides great quality and price.

Why take up all that weight in a suite case.

stockiefan Right back at you.

Suggest 'you get out more' then you wouldn't need to import pork.

There are pork shops here. OK not £8 but then you don't have to risk being caught or go to the bother of using 4 kilo of your weight allowance on something you really don't need.

What is it with some people that they can't go on holiday without the need to turn smuggler?

Mr Pork at Alsancak. Finest Pork products we have ever eaten . Fresh, not like the pre packed food in the UK.

Not expensive, why go South, Why bring from UK ?

4 Kilos from UK on Pegasus if you are overweight = £ 36.00. (now that's an expensive joint of meat.)

I have no problem with Mr Pork. His meat is very good, but we are on the east of girne and go south regularly to meet from from the "dark side" so get meat there so saves a jouney to west if girne

When we first moved here I believe Mr Pork used to supply Erdener and Astro.

But when he opened his shop it stopped.

It would be good for you people over that side if he did have an outlet.

I will mention it to him.

Redwine, how do you get it across the border?

Packed with your other shopping or hidden in the car?

I thought the import of meat from the South into TRNC was illegal.

JohhnyLee, It would be great if you could have a word with the Pork Shop about supplying one of the supermarkets around the Esentepe area. I ,as i am sure others from this side,

do go to the shop and get our bacon and pork products sometimes, but it would be fantastic if he had an outlet on the east side, i am sure it would be profitable for him.

Well said msg 7.....

It is illegal to bring ANY fresh meat into ANY country..... just hope those that do never have to witness the destruction to the lively hoods of the country they live in with disease brought in by uncooked meats!!

Irresponsible, selfish, thoughtless and plain stupid!! Plus a nice hefty fine of £5,000 if found importing from a country with any disease or not approved by DEFRA ...

Msg 19,

Judging by some of the posts, this does not apply to Brits.

Where does Mr Pork get his meat (I know from pigs) Yes it would be great if he had an outlet on east side.

Msg 19 Does this mean that the pork from orphanides is infected?

It beggars belief at how selfish people are or just don't know the rules of importing fresh meat.

Having been on the rough end of Foot and Mouth, I would personally make every one that brings in meat to any country with out it being cooked, hold the gun to the animals that succumb to the disease, its not just the pigs. sheep, cattle poultry, its the devastation of peoples lives too.....

You are allowed to take in meat from one EU country to another. Google it yourself.

Ballyboffin, Not into the TRNC you are not. They have a strict regulation prohibiting it. You are quoting EU regs in a place where they don't apply so good luck with quoting your legal right to import goods that they expressly prohibit....

I didn't say that you were allowed to take meat into TRNC. I was replying to message 19, where dizzycows said that it was illegal to take meat into ANY country.

In actual fact you could LEGALLY take it to Larnaca.

Yes dizzycows is wrong, we know that but as we are talking about the TRNC it's a moot point. If someone reading your post was to rely on the advice on entering the TRNC they might have problems.

That's why it's best to qualify any statement re north and south regs.

Grouchy, re-read what I said. Personally, I have no intention of bringing meat into any country, never mind TRNC. My posting was to clarify that you CAN import meat from ANY EU country to another.

Groucho, I do suggest you go to the DEFRA web page where it tells you that any raw food containing animal material is an offence!!

To bring in raw meat is against several countries Agricultural rules for what ever country....

Go and look for yourself, how on earth do you think the last huge out break of FMD came to this country ..GB... that is ,.... To say you can import meat is correct IF you have an importers license, to import meat in a suite case is not legal....

Msg 15 Its a lot further to go to the south side than Alsancak and you have to buy insurance. My point was earlier that its illegal to bring meat here so if you get stopped its taken away and you can be fined.

I believe Dizzycows does have a life, on a farm in the UK so has probably seen the effects that disease such as Foot and Mouth can have much more than any of us have, she is also entitled to an opinion without people being rude and objectionable.

Whatever you may feel about bringing meat into TRNC, from the UK or South Cyprus, it is illegal, you may not like the laws but that is just too bad, people are expected to abide by the laws of the country they are living in.

I am currently in the UK and the prices for meat are now very high.

I can get pork much cheaper on the south side just over the border at the hypermarket opposite Macdonalds (turn left at the Hoola Hoop roundabout). Excellent value

I get my pork products from the pork shop in Alsancak, excellent quality, supports a local business, and totally legal.

IMHO, What difference is there bringing meat from the UK than buying it in the south? You are still breaking the law by taking it into TRNC.

Thank you hattikns.

Redwine, nobody is stopping you from doing what you want, go for it, bring in meat, just don't expect any sympathy from any one if you get caught!

Yes, I/we do have a life now, not quite the same as before we had FMD which took our lively hood and our beloved herd of pedigree cattle, all 450 head!

We still have the scars from that time. One son never fully recovered, several farmers shot themselves, the 'killers', those that came to kill your animals, even they turned bolted guns on each other!

Some even killed the cattle dogs all because they happened to be rounding up the sheep. Cows just giving birth were let give birth then shot, the babies too.

So please don't tell me to get a life, Redwine, you are most welcome to come to our farm, watch our in house video of the events, then perhaps you would think of others too.

dizzycows,

I apologise if I have offended you. I have seen first hand the devestation that Foot and Mouth causes.

I was just pointing out that it is now ALLOWED to take animal products from one EU country to another, even without license, as the EU countries HAVE to trust one another's veterinary practices............French, Spanish & Italian beef, lovely ....... not, but..Now on sale at major supermarkets in the UK.

No problem ballyboffin, you haven't offended me, its just making people aware that there are rules etc, and if anyone falls foul of them, so be it, I for one would not have any sympathy.

Yes, devastation in a massive way, so many lives lost, all because of some uncooked meat from another country that should never have been here in the first place ....

Any way, lets hope nothing like it happens again..
