If you fancy a bit of opera then tonight and tomorrow are the nights to get down to Girne Amphitheatre!

Starting at 8pm there will be various opera pieces many of which you will recognise as it is supposed to be 'popular' opera ie Nessun Dorma, Carmen etc

Tickets are available at the door also at Deniz Plaza, Iktisatbank, Cyprus Arts School (if they are open due to Bayram!)

The orchestra are from Antalya, musicians and singers from Germany, Turkey and locally.

(I am posting on behalf of a friend)

Thank you

Yes, I will be there tomorrow. Long story. I even have the music, so I suggest you don't come down the front cos I shaure - ll be reading the score and maybe even joining in. and I reckon everyone should let rip when theydo the Hallelujah chorus! Lots of us know it inside out. and then there is the Bridal March freom lohengrin - you might know the music but do you know the words. and then one of Turgay Hilmi's kids will be singing the Faure requiem piece - and lots more.

come and get a bit of culture, easy listening style.

and don't despair scoobydoo, there is thursday night too!

Marion,

Just come back and what a superb night, we had thunder as back ground music!!

I am not really into opera but this was excellent. There were bits that even I recognised!

Turgay's student was unbelieveable, so talented and deserved her outstanding round of applause.

An excellent night, just a shame it wasn't advertised more in the english press.

Enjoy your evening.

Thanks, I will go tyomorrow and hope it doesn't rain. I wanted to go today, but Him Downstairs said 'leave it until tomorrow' and I told him if it gets rained off I will hold him responsible.

As to advertising, not sure how you do it. Most of the newspapers want money for advertising, or it goes into the Events column, and of course people don't pick up on things that odn't interest them, but there were LOADS of posters around, so hopefully people will have noticed that.

So what did you recognise? the things I mentioned? Wedding March, Hallelujah Chorus, maybe the bits from Carmen, and the drinking song , or what or not?

How about coming again Thursday and holding my hand and reading my music then we can both sing the Hallelujah chorus (sotto voce, of course!)

Hi Marion

Thought the whole evening was fantastic. The standard of singing and orchestral talent was great and some of the pieces raised the hairs on the back of my neck. What a great evening, only sad note was that the place should have been packed to the rafters!

As scoobydoo said, the rumbling in the background all helped to make it very atmospheric.

Turguy did a fantastic job organising this event and really look forward to the next.

Marion,

If you heard my singing, you would not want to be near me!!

The singers last night were superb so lets just stick with them, also I don't know the words.

It was just a beautiful night with fantastic music and I am not really an opera lover but recognised all but 2 pieces.

So if anyone is stuck for something to do tonight why not pop along and see this for only 20TL.

But I HAVE the words - of course much of it is German, Italian and French, but......... I am not sure I agree with the sentiment 'iof anyone is stuck for something to do', but on the other hand, I think more people should have a listen to the kind of music with which they may not be famil;iar. Once upon a time football fans would have screamed at the thought of their liking opera. 'Gerroff! And along comes Pavarotti with his own rendition of Nesun dorma, and suddenly thousands of butch blokes love opera! Don#'t pre judge, I reckon.

So, I won't see you there then, Scooby doo. What a shame!

No offers from Carole either to come and share my music! If ONLY I had got to the rehearsals! D.......

Did my singing last night, fortunately drowned out by the thunder, have no voice left now to go again, so have a great night you will love it.

I believe it is the same as last night! Guess they were hoping that there would be plenty of takers, but like many things out here, justice is rarely done to really good events. The choir has been brought in from Germany especially for the event. From the list I was given, I believe the same programme each night.

Hope that helps.

Go along and find out, it was such a great night and such talent, if it is the same as last night you are in for such a treat, please fill the ampitheatre up, makes for a much better atmosphere and these people have come a long way to sing and play for us.

Wonderful, enjoy.

We went to the show last night and loved it!, Sadly as is often the case it was poorly attended, maybe if it was advertised more in advance the numbers of people attending would be greater.

Shame really as the orchestra, soloists and choir were wonderful, and what a setting!!!

So come on organisers, plan it better next time and I am sure it will be supported.

Have to agree the performance was brilliant, and the audıence so apprecıatıve.

Shame that there were probably more people on stage than there was in the audıence !!!

Why don't these concerts get more publicity ??? İ only found out from reading Cyprus 44 yesterday.

I did put it on the events page for Turgay Hilmi and then started this thread as an extra push plus we put out a few posters for the event but I will take all your comments to him as I do have a feeling that it was left to 'some one else' to advertise and they clearly did not and the audience figures were a let down for such a professional event.
