Yes Shortening is still around and you can certainly buy it at ILLELLI Supermarket at Alsancak. It is near the baking section and comes in a large tin like container of 1200 grams and it is called "CHEF-DAY". That is the only place I have seen it in the North, most supermarkets in the South sell it.
