Can I wish you all a happy next millennium... OK we might not all make it but I fully intend to....

A wishful thinker...

Two Irishmen talking one says "So what did you think of those millennium celebrations?"

Second one says "Total rubbish! In fact I've decided, I'm not going to the next one"

No1Doyen - just saying to Mr Wick tonight on the way home from work that I wondered when we would see the first lot of decorations going up. I wouldn't mind so much (well, I would) if we didn't still have roses in the garden! Aaargh!

PUT CHRISTMAS BACK TO CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!

That has always been my sentiment and here it is perfect with none of the commercial garbage. My opinion is the only people who gain from Christmas are the retailers and the true sentiment was lost long ago.

That said, we have had the 2 best Christmas Days ever since we came here. This year is our third.

You know who I think are the real rip-off merchants... bloody greetings card manufacturers....

The biggest rip-off of all, "Grandmother's Day" cards.... think about it... yep you've got it... they already get a mother's day card so why do they need another card...

Oh yeah, so that the hard-up card companies can screw some money out of Grandma's little Grandchildren who can hardly afford a card for their own mums...

I want to start a backlash now... don't buy commercial cards, even the charity ones are a con... get the kids to make their own personal cards for your family and friends who will no doubt appreciate the efforts and treasure the results...

If you feel the need, donate a bit of money to the charity of your choice.

Let's send the card manufacturers into oblivion... we've had enough of their expensive tacky cards...

I'm going to lie down now....

Well No1doyen, just my warped sense of humour I suppose! my other half works with quite a few mmmm how shall I describe them? snooty, posers, snobs get the idea? well they seem to be in competition every year to buy the poshest most expensive ostentatious Christmas cards. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they get one of our 'credit crunch' cards! (I have had some lovely charity cards printed which I will be sending to our friends) Sending a few Tesco ones might just shorten my list for next year ha ha

Groucho, I decided many years ago that the only benefit of sending a Christmas card to people you see all the time was to make the greetings card manufacturers even richer, so I only send cards to friends/relatives abroad and in other parts of the UK. For some years now, instead of sending cards to colleagues at work, we all donate the card money into a central fund for two charities. Last year it was NSPCC and Cats Protection League. The money is split between the two. Far better than bolstering the coffers of the bloody rich card manufacturers.

I support your revolution/backlash..... don't buy commercial cards for people you see on a day to day basis. Donate the money instead.

w26kay - I think this is a great idea and fortunately it seems more and more people are opting to do this now - us included!

We've been doing that for years in our Office. Donate to a different charity every year instead of buying each other cards.
