Holy books were written as a guideline on how to live a life....every 10th commandment is a law in a (modern) court...and they are great and wholesome laws.



Without these laws, then anarchy would rule. Scientists say that the development of language is what separates us from animals....i say it's the development of consciousness and accountability...but it is language that has enabled this school of thought to prosper.



I am an eternal agnostic bordering atheist...i need a God to actually stop by for a cup of tea and a chat, to actually make me believe, however...without all the believers in the world, we would probably be living in a completely lawless world where it is ok to eat our neighbours...so, although i do not elieve in an Almight Lord...i do think belief (not religion) in a God is a gift that many of us have yet to be blessed with.

Going back to the original past-'why are we here', does not have anything to do with religion in my opinion.

My answer to the question would be(as other posters have said) we evolved.(from shrews as far as current research can tell)

Religion was a concept created by people, as a way of controlling the unruly types,almost like an invisible police force.

Look at the murals in ancient churches and temples around the world.

They all bear out the same philosophy- behave badly and you wont go to heaven!

The concept of God exists because the human condition has to believe in a greater power for comfort.

Almost like an eternal insurance company.

Believe in god- you get to go to heaven!

Disbelieve , and you go to hell.

Unfortunately for mankind, Religion- I.E the belief in certain ideologies, has been the single cause of pain and death known to humanity.

Excepting the mosquito of course.

I have to believe in miracles and some form of omnipotent and benevolt being, because I am - albeit amatuer and not always very successfully - a gardener. I put a tiny brown seed in the ground and sometime it grows into a beautiful flower or a delicious vegetable. OK, maybe I feed and water it, but no way could I infuse the miracle of life into it that makes it develop.



What I cant believe in is the established Church so called committed Christians who use religion as a comfort blanket treat their Church as an exclusive club with its rituals and restricted services , and are totally blind tto other forms of belief and worship... They forget that the Son of their God preached to and cared for the sick, the poor and the outcasts and even had time for doubting Thomas. He did not just preach that they should worship him to the exclusion of all else - He also said they should love their neighbour as themselves.

Most people are missing the point.

science has proved the world was not created by god and evoluation proves god did not make men,period.

Because of this i think it's higly unlikely there is a god and if there was it would be far more complex than these man made religon's,the amont of different religons shows it's not true,for instance there's proof the quaran has copied the bible in many ways.

Religon is a man made way of dealing with the thought of death,which i can understand i wish i could believe i was going to a better place and that death was not the end,but the truth is we are just animals with fears and we are able to create things in our mind's as defence mecanisams.

As we evolved it means there was no adam and eve and no god had plans for us, if there is a god it would not be a god with human like feelings it would not be an animal it would be a force without feeling but 99% sure there is not one,humans and little earth would be very insignificant on the scale of things.

lagosboy you evolved from a monkey peroid,god did not create man,i was watching a programe the other night and they were showing the bones of the the different stages from monkey to man and the way we evolved from apes,they can re construct the bones to show what we would have looked like through each stage of the evoluation process.



Like i said if there is a god he did not create man,and the bible is proven to be wrong without a shadow of doudt in this modern age.



I suppose you have nothing to lose because when you die you will never no you was wrong,i have got religous friends and its not a problem.



So this lovely god decided to put dinosours on the planet first and watch these monsters rip each other apart for his entertainment,then changed his mind and wiped them out.So in your mind we did not evlove from apes even thoe proven.

When my mother went into hospital, at 57 years of age, my father ticked "Catholic" as religion. My mother was refused the last rites by the Catholic priest because she hadn't taken Holy Communion the day before. That's when I realised there was no god. Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, yes, god, no.

"God created" man after he created the rest of the world. Suppose you accept that the seven days is a parable or illustration, he still created man if instead of waving a magic wand and Adam appeared fully formed, man evolved (ie was created) over millions of years from a simpler life form. The millions of years is too difficult for simple human to comprehend so whoever wrote that particular part of the Bible merely simplified the process and shortened the time span



Man has done a lot of things recently, even clone animals, but he hasnt managed to produce that single spark we call life that starts the whole process. The meaning of any creatures life is to reproduce then die in most cases,A female praying mantas will eat the male after he mates with her and he actually knows this will happen and it will help the babies grow,is this gods sense of humour again or just life.



Just do what you have got to do to be happy,if you believe god has a purpose for you how are you really ever yourself if your always thinking what it is and what you should be doing.

When the riots in the uk were happening three asian men were killed in a hit and run in birmingham,as i guess most of you know,now what i noticed was the father of one of the men went on air saying what had happened has happened and telling the muslim community not to retaliate,which is a great thing to do and could have saved many lives,nice man.

When he was being interviewed he did not seem happy but not distressed either and it seemed very strange how relaxed and unfazed he was,he went on to say he was a muslim and allah had taken his son away and i hope he forgives his son,he was saying that it was gods will as if his son had done bad things and this is what happens.

Then after a pause and another question,he then said i dont understand why this has happened why would these people do such a thing and went on to say what he thought of the murderers,now talk about his faith and reality clashing and totally contradicting each other,but it shows how religon can help you deal with

nobody knows the size of the universe,and if there were a god why did he make our planet the size of a speck of dust compared with all that space out there,?we all know there is a time difference out there ,beyond,so maybe we are still in the explosion,but what is millions of years in earths time could be minutes in space,i dont think theres a heaven and hell after,where were you before you were born?or should i say before you were a sperm?

Perhaps this is why I can't find anything spiritual inside churches - but what I can find and see and hear is rank hypocrisy in their congregations.



As for your theory about 'human immortality' - this must, if no deceased person has ever manifested him or herself to you, be merely a 'self-comforting assumption' on your part!
