Well we think they have a very good point.



We tried it last night. Fish and Chips, mushy peas and a drink. 18 TL £6.60. Great Value. Normally 17 TL for fish and chips, but this was a special night.



The place was packed. I think everyone in Alsancak was eating fish and chips.



Beatiiful clean white cod, perfect chips . crispy batter. Some of the nicest we have ever had.

Hillside are the best by far, certainly of a much higher quality than Jessics, my opinion of course.

I am a bit funny about fish and chips. It must be Cod, white and no bones. One bone and the meal is in the bin.

Johhny Lee's recommendations seem to be very sound. I followed his advice regarding a curry at Al Haci. It was chicken curry on the menu but I asked if I could have prawn curry and was told "no problem". It came with rice, chips, salad bowl. The amount of juicy prawns in a delicious curry was amazing. My starter was mussells and there were so many I counted them, 24 ! The whole was a very reasonable price.



I too agree with his comments regarding Fish and Chips at Hillside but Mermaids (fish and tits) evidently are not on the menu.

Obviously, they do not have any in the freezer but, if they had, cooking on a "brasier" (gas mark 4 or 36 DD cup ?) would be fine !

Anyone who eats cod, given the dearth of the species, no matter how much they enjoyed it, should refrain from advertising this most tasty seafood. When it's gone, it's gone. Let's preserve this king of fishes for our children to experience.

ps Have tried Mus's chefs cod at Jessics, still think Ravine will take some beating.

Yes we have had fish and chips many times at the Ravine, very good. But last time the fish was a bit grey.



I am very funny about fish. So I look forward to trying Jessics next.

Talking of fish didn't he have a nasty experience with some sushie, almost killed him and he lost loads and loads of weight.



Also a litlle bit off topic, I have heard very good reports about the curry at Sunset. Only 10 lira.



I think we are very lucky here in TRNC. There are so many good places to eat.



Some of the small kebab shops are very good.



I have never really been bothered with Pizza. But Buongiorno in Alsancak is amazing and they stay open until about 4.00am.

just a shame about the fag ends all over the floor, the grubby upholstery and lack of beer mats the place looks like it needs a really good clean, delicious fish and chips though.

Thanks J'lee and Redwine, I think I'll give them acall - I really miss eating a good fish & chips, like they serve in England. Been to couple of places but it's just not the same! I definitely want to try Hillside hoping it will be a better experience.

BTW, I think what makes the fish & chips taste so good is not just the fish, but the chips that come with it. In London, many used to buy just the "chips" after a few beers

You English don't know what fish and chips (cod yuk) is until you have had fresh haddock in a chippie anywhere in the north east of Scotland or the Shetland Isles. Now that is real fish!

Haddock is the only fish to eat with chips......Cod is overfished,and should not exploited.....If you had Cod here it was not fresh ,it was frozen...........when you live on a tiny "Fish Rich Island" you can tell the difference......

My missus and I must try some of these other places for fish and chips when we next visit N Cyprus.



Fact is we tried Cod Baba when we first came here a few years ago and always have a meal there when we visit. After that we enjoy the view from our terrace with sundowners and Mr Porky's chops and suchlike on the barbie that we find we don't actually want to go out for a meal!

If cod is endangered, it's the fault of more than 20 years of incompetent EU fishing policies.

Throwing perfectly good fish back into the sea once dead, because it's the wrong sort of fish for that period is among their mad schemes.

Canada got it right some years ago when they paid fishermen to lay-up their boats for some years, giving stocks some time to recover. Now Cod is plentiful around their waters.

But then Canada has a joined-up government, not 27 squabbling idiots.

Can the mods please do something about all this blatant advertising by Hillside? The thread sparked a debate about where to find the best fish and chips in North Cyprus, but I've counted no fewer than 25 entries from Hillside along the lines of "Call XXXXXX for bookings" or other blatant advertisements.

And actually, I think you'll have to be damned good to beat the fish (whether cod or haddock) at Codbaba.

I started this topic simply because when we went it ranked amongst the best Commercial Fish and Chips we had ever eaten. As good as anything in the UK even.



It really was spot on. But we have only been once. (look forward to going again) and hope the standards are still high.



Yes I tend to agree with you that Hillside post a lot. But that's just being active and trying to promote their business.



Some of our friends went there for Sunday Lunch and they said that was also very very good and tremendous value.

We had your fish n chips the other day and it was realy well cooked and presented and served in very simple surroundings,just good grub,we went for t,early doors about 6ish,cheap as well and a free drink with your meal i think it was 18tl, yum!!

Been to Hillside recently,excellent quality all round. As for Grimsby,my exoerience of the good old British F & c was an absolute disgrace.You wont better Hillside anywhere locally from our experience.18TL to include a drink,have a word with youselves.(Only my opinion of course,& we are all entitled to those).
