We have had an influx of little black flies everywhere, never seen them before, they are on the ceiling, in cupboards, they are small and round and have hard little bodies, has anyone else had this problem. This is the first time in 5 years I have seen them.

A black fly (sometimes called a buffalo gnat, turkey gnat, or white socks) is any member of the family Simuliidae of the Culicomorpha infraorder. They are related to the Ceratopogonidae, Chironomidae, and Thaumaleidae. There are over 1,800 known species of black flies (of which 11 are extinct). Most species belong to the immense genus Simulium. Most black flies gain nourishment by feeding on the blood of mammals, including humans, although the males feed mainly on nectar.

Delia - I was going to say "little black flies" but Bill beat me to it If they are what I think they are, we get them here in UK following a spell (in our case, 2 days) of warm weather. You say they are tiny with black hard bodies. It sounds as though it's them. They get absolutely everywhere - we've even had them behind the glass in picture/photograph frames and the TV screen. They seem to go as quickly as they arrive, if that's any consolation. It's actually hot today in UK, as it was yesterday, so we'll probably have an influx of the little buggers tomorrow (when it's going to rain, apparently). J

I tthink I have had the same problem - but I thought they looked more like some form of small flying beetle - very round bodies about the size of a drawing pin head? If so, I have never seem them before - either here (14 + 3 years) or in England (..........years) Oh well, life always has some new experience to offer!
