Is stealing someones bread a bigger sin in Gods book than stealing peoples houses cos if not a few hard hats over here will be useful.

I have no wish to use a taxi of any description in the TRNC even if there was no fare to pay. I drove the coastal road from the Acapulco area to Girne at 1145 pm last night and was overtaken by no less than 3 black LHD Mercedes taxis travelling at speeds in excess of 100 kph in a 65 kph zone and these caused oncoming vehicles to take evasive action and similarly endangered those travelling in the same direction by cutting across them and negating what were safe braking distances. As I continued the journey from Girne to Alsancak it came to my mind that I rarely journey anywhere without having to avoid an assault by a moron using a taxi as a weapon.

msg 15

do you think that is a good enough reason to encourage illegal taxis?

Re msg 4 I think we need to distinguish between those on the island who have behaved dishonorably or unlawfully when it comes to various property deals and those who are trying to make a lawful living. Their job is being made harder by others who do not play by the rules and who's behavior is more akin to the developers, lawyers estate agents who in some cases are rightly despised.

yes yorg, agree with you on that statement, but surely if a friend or what ever who is british drives several people to the south etc, and he makes people feel safe, I know who I would rather ride with.. legal or not!

Our last 3 visits have scared the hell out of me with the reckless driving.... Dont know who to use on our next visit , as have tried several already.... but there are so many taxi firms in NC and think they all need another driving test...

If you read his post again you will see that he is not encouraging the use of illegal taxis. He is just stating that he would never use ANY taxi in the TRNC. Neither would I for that matter

Re msg15 perhaps if the legal taxis weren't having trade nicked by unlawful ones they wouldn't be rushing everywhere to try and make a living.

yorgozlu. In line 1 I said a taxi "of any description" ie legal or otherwise driven by foreigner or Cypriot. I would rather walk, and as far from the roads as possible !

Dizzycows - try IBO taxis they are in Alsancak. Ive always felt safe with them - they dont try to drive like formula 1 drivers!! (unless late for a flight!) Other taxis - try saying you are not trying to win any races and they may calm down!!

I was already aware of that.................in a way I kind of completed msg 15 in my own way.

Saying that,I react no differently when I see someone doing illegaly what I do.If need be I chase themoff and threaten the owners of the house to report them to home office for encouraging illegal employment.

I pay my duties,I live in a proper home,I live proper life,so in return I demand the right price...........they dont.......they live in unfinnished houses with no electric or water, they eat bread and onion, they wear what I bin, they pay no duties...........of course they can do it at half price...................in fact, they make more profit then I..........................kind of changes the topic, but I assume you'd know who 'they' are.

By 'they', I assume that you are refering to mainlanders or anyone else working illegally ??

Like yourself, I disagree with people working illegally but I also recognise that old TC adage of 'always the victim but never the cause'. The reason that the TRNC taxi business is in such dire straights is not down to a few expat 'illegal' taxis - the problem is much closer to home. A report in the papers a few months ago stated that half of the dolmus' operating in Girne were doing so illegally - why aren't the taxi drivers reporting them ? Also the taxi union is licensing too many taxis - there is only so much trade available, the more taxis, the thinner the spread. For once it would be good to see 'locals' recognising where the main faults lies and not take the easy option of blaming the expats !!

Just my opinion of course

Paul
