All posters here seem to underestimate the risks of incoming/outgoing data traffic on their computer(s). 1 : Your hard drive may be infected by malware, forcing your software to send rubbish third party messages time and time again - without you even knowing it. But it's very annoying for the receivers. 2 : Far more dangerous is your incoming data traffic: emails, opening web pages and more - hidden malware may enter your software. Ever had your hard drive wiped clean completely? It happens. There is one thing you should do: buy software to control your incoming/outgoing data traffic. Not a free, light version, but a pro version that will be updated on line daily. Such software (not expensive) will intercept incoming/outgoing problems and put them (email, web pages) apart for inspection or it will delete them. You never have to worry again about your email and other actions on your computer. Think it over!

I have a question for Hans, please or anyone else who understands. On my visit home I had my trusted friend take a look at my laptop and he found that for some reason within its workings ''It was not working to its full capacity'' He said it was very strange, and knowing me as he dose said that it would have needed to be someone ''who know about computers to have even gone into these settings !'' I would never have known. How could it have happened ! Why would it be set like that ? or been working like that ? I wondered why it kept crashing and since my return have had no further problems with it,it seems to be now working at full speed too.All help in simple terms would be appreciated thanks. Spider,X

Possibly you need to increase the size of your RAM - usually to be accessed via a small panel in the centre at the back of a laptop. I had the same problem and fixed it this way!

More likely the virtual memory (VM) settings restricting size/number of pages cached. Inappropriate factory settings more than likely as you didn't know of anybody changing these settings till your pal sorted them out.

There are still some rogue applications that do not release memory successfully even after they've been shut down (we called this effect memory leaks and were often written in C or C++ using 'object- oriented' application techniques) over time they eat up RAM and cause memory low/shortages. Re-setting the computer masks/solves the problem. My son's on-line games seem to be the current worst culprits. I.E. we get no crashes when nothing he's played has been loaded since last re-set.

Thanks. Inappropriate factory settings could not have been the problem as from the start things were working fine ! I use the laptop for very little just emails,Facebook,44 and the daily papers..Thats about it ! He just did not seem to understand how it could have happened. I just hope that things have now been sorted but what do I do if it happens again ? I am not even sure if they would again ! I think that is what gives me the worry not knowing if it might do the same again ? Spider,X
