We have a very old cat that is 18yr and he has been to the vets last week with a urine infection. He was given antibiotic injection and we were given antibiotic tablets to give him.

This works for a while but his infection is back.We have been having great difficulties getting the meds into him,we soak them in a little water and use a syringe to administer it but this is giving him great distress,he has no teeth, the tablets are rather large too so even breaking them up would be no good.

All help much appreciated thanks.

You may not like this, a toothless 18 year old, you should look at his quality of life.

paddywack (mess 2)

I have a toothless 18 year old cat that also has thyroid problems, so occasionally has fits! his quality of life is good although like spiders cat has a little dementia! but now takes his medication like a baby!

I also have a 90 year old Mum who's quality of life is good although she has a little dementia, and many health problems!

I'm glad I'm neither your mum or your cat :-(

Have to agree with message 5. Crushing the tablets between two spoons usually works if powder then mixed with moggies favourite food and hand fed...we have wrapped in pieces of room temperature ham, tinned sardines and/or tuna, usually did the trick. In the past just put mixture in cats bowl, she would sniff and walk away...feeding small portions by hand though a bit more time consuming did the trick. Hope this helps. (Did the same when looking after our neighbours very elderly moggie and also worked with her). Good luck.

Thanks but we have tried all the above,he is a very fussy eater. We crush the tablet up and mix with water as I cannot or do not like the thought of cutting it into quarters and and forcing it down him,so thought that the other alternative would be better with the syringe but it seems not !

Hi spider, Maybe you could buy a syringe (without a needle of course ) then crush the tablets add water and squirt the medicine in his mouth.

One of you may have to wrap him in a towel first (just so he doesn't end up on your head).

I had two mogs in the UK they lived to be 27 and 28 respectively. They outlived the dog that joined us when they were 16.

One had thyroid problems and needed large tablets. He didn't mind us opening his mouth throwing the tablet in and then holding his mouth closed whilst we rubbed his throat. Sounds awful I know but he didn't seem to mind.

They both had dementia in the end and howled a lot, they also went deaf, but they enjoyed life and were very loving and loved.

Thanks for all your help so far.I think what I have been doing is once crushed adding too much water with it 10mls...Think I will just mix it with a tablespoon of tuna oil as you have suggested rowan.

We are now just hoping that Mr Boots will live till he is 27yrs

Over a year ago i had to feed worming tablets to a part feral cat, which was one of the most awful experiences for me and the cat ever. However, i did eventually succeed by crushing the pills and mixing with a little water, then with a syringe WITH the needle, i injected the solution into a chunk of liver, some dribbled out, but the majority was finally ingested. You could use anything as long as it is a solid and will hold the liquid.

Good Luck with your cat.

He sounds adorable.

Please persevere with the crushed tablet and syringe ..... I am sure that it is worth it.

They do get used to it and sometimes they know that it is a contest and are determined to win.

You know what they say 'patience is a virtue'. Definitely what you need

However you clearly adore this gentleman and I'm sure that you will not give up.He sounds just like any other ageing cat and I'm sure that he has many years yet.

God Bless.

One of my cats will not take medicine for love nor money.

I take him to the vet for worming, and if there are antibiotics needed the same. The vet can give antibiotic shots that last 2 or 3 days, and I prefer the hassle of taking him in to the worry of not knowing if he has had his proper dose or saved some to spit out when I look the other way.

I have two different types of gel in a tube. One for long haired cats to combat hair balls, and one for the teeth. I crush the pill, mix it with a bit of gel, get my cat in a "half nelson" and stick it in his mouth, and hold shut till he swallows it all. As they like the taste of the gels, it's not that hard, but if they struggle it can get a bit messy!!!!!!.

Thanks for all your help and advice. We have now managed mixed with less liquids.I have seen large tablets but these are huge !

If we are unable to keep this up twice a day then we will take him back to the vets for regular injections till it is clear.

I too heard dry cat food no good for elderly cats as their kidneys are failing due to their age.

My cat is over 20, just one or two teeth now but still loves to eat the raw pork rind I put out for the birds.

I have come late to this discussion. However, Spider, There is a liquid antibiotic you can buy for animals. LARGOPEN. It comes in a bottle in powder form. You mix (according to the instructions) with water. I then use a syringe to administer 1ml to the cats. They seem to like the taste and as I give it to them just before feeding them, they associate it with food and take it willingly. I buy the Largopen at Hatice's chemist in Alsancak but I'm sure you can get it at most chemists. If you do buy it, make sure that you let the chemist know it is for cats because the human version is different.

maybe thats why he has this problem, cats can tolerate a high protein diet but something in biscuits gives them infections , as i say too late now, but maybe giving him liver ,being so high in protein may cause more problems ??? im no expert but maybe some fresh boiled chicken??? the liquid syringe sounds like a good idea bless him

Pertev has special Royal Canin dry food for cats with urinary problems, or from the South get Science Diet CD cat food either dried or in tins. Good luck, it's so hard when our animals have something wrong with them.

Have you tried soaking the biscuits in water to soften them for Moxie? When Pancho was in his early 20s he began to get infections and the vet said mixing them with water would help as it was the lack of water with biscuits that caused the problems. He would eat them like that but Oscar refused anything but minced fresh chicken or prawns!

We can't have prawns in the house any more as our Cat goes on 'fridge patrol' if you go anywhere near the fridge (even days after they have been eaten) you get wailed at!

I have a dog that had a positive genuis for eating anything wrapped round tablets (liver, ice cream, doggie chocs etc) and spitting out the tablet and drove me (and two vets!) up the wall.

Solution - processed cheese triangles! Go down a treat. The tablet sticks to them and they are slippery so easily swallowed. Worth trying for the cat? You may need to break the tablets up.

I always use Dairylea Cheese and the cats take pills no problem with that. If the pills are large tho you have to do it in 2 or more doses.

I have often thought that the people that design pills for cats have never owned a cat.

I know, you wouldn't think it too difficult in this day and age to make them 1) smaller and 2) taste of tuna or chicken.

Often opening the worming tablet packet can make them run a mile because of the horrible smell.

Daisy Dukes message 14:

Great tip for getting the tablets into liver for the ferals. I'm going to give that a try.

Crushing the tablets and mixing with tuna just hasn't worked, and they'd rather go hungry.

Poor Mr Boots is covered in pink colour and smells of vitamin B...never have liked the smell of that !

What a job but it has to be done, bet if he could he would run once he see's me to the ready

We have never bathed him before but lets hope he enjoys it once things improve ! He loves to go to the pool and have his head wet all over by us to cool down so maybe he will be fine.

He also loves to go to the vets to be shave once a year, just lays down and enjoys it ! Such a funny old boy

Thanks for all your helpful tips.
