Try asking the neighbours to move the kennel first. If that doesn't work. Write a letter to your belediye - in Turkish if possible-and hand it in personally. Could you also get a few neighbours to sign it? This happened to friends in Girne. The neighbours were asked (by the belediye)to move their dog to the back of their house rather than it being tied up at the front and barking at every passerby and car. They did not comply and a couple of weeks later dog was gone. I don't know whether the belediye took it or the neighbours gave it to someone.

We have a terrible problem in ozankoy, just below the abbey. The dogs bark all night and the owners just don't care. Down the old crusader road there are several dogs left to bark all night outside. Everybody knows the houses and which dogs are a problem. I wish someone would make them disappear and we can all get back to a quite life!

I have dogs, one of which is outside at night. She does not bark at night unless there is a disturbance. However, there is a field next door where food is grown and the growers leave dogs unattended as guard dogs. These dog/dogs bark and set off all the dogs in the area barking including my own. She has been trained not to bark and once she is assured all is OK she settles down, but the other dogs in the area continue to bark.

Unattended dogs left as security guards cause a log of the problem.

But therein lies the problem-I'm sure the person that owns the dogs next door to you will blame someone Else's dogs- and so on and so on.

You cant really blame a farmer for having dogs-One dog barks and it sets off a chain reaction for every dog in TRNC potentially, I suppose it's the doggy version of twitter.

The solution is I guess,If you don't to be anti social don't own a dog- or try to find a deaf dog.

Is this the reason , on another thread, that a person wanted to buy arsenic. If these animals are disturbing the quality of life of residents surely the answer is a visit to the vet, half a bark is better than no bark at all.

Dogs left out at night that bark at every little noise are a real problem .....guard dogs or not. I agree with chrism, some nights in Ozankoy it was like sleeping in a dog pound!

Owners should take responsibility for the noise made by their dogs throughout the night. If they bark all night, then take them into the house, they are your problem and you have a duty to consider the needs of your neighbours, many who may have to get up early to go to work.

Its another example of people being totally inconsiderate. You have my sympathy message 1.

Do the owners of these dogs not hear their barking ? Surely they are themselves, disturbed by the noise !

Eamonn ,msg9-I think some people react to their dogs barking the same way as they react to their kids bad behavior in restaurants.

They just smile.

As the saying goes- your own farts don't smell bad.

Blade, you obviously experience a sorry existence if you think that it is acceptable for adults and children to be kept awake night after night by barking dogs in my opinion any anti social behaviour by either animals or humans is unacceptable.

Thats why we left the UK!

This is not the UK, so maybe if you don't like the TRNC way of life, it may be time to look to pastures new?

I have a constant battle with dog barking not from my kennels but from neighbouring dogs. But you just have to get over it, don't let it bother you. If it does then as i said move elsewhere. Its not going to change anytime soon.

Blade, how many times have I heard that old chestnut "this is not the UK" Well surprise surprise that why we moved here!

Barking dogs are a serious problem here, ruining the peace and quite of a lot of people. However I wont be moving to pastures new, but maybe the dogs will be.

Are barking dogs really a serious problem ? it is a pain in the begining but something to get used to.I just take my hearing aid out and sleep like a log.

Cyprus is a noisy place. Some people should have lived here when there were also cocks crowing and donkeys braying all night! There is an owl that flies past my window late every night - just turn over and go back

If you are here for the right reasons, you get used to it, it goes with the terrirtory.

What keeps me awake is venues that play loud music and let off fireworks until the early hours. Presumably they get the custom to justify paying for it - I would like to suggest that everyone who patronises these places should be shut up indoors with the music.

Actually I keep my dogs indoors at night and also when I am away from the house (which seriously restricts my movements ) but that is my choice and they are small dogs. It is not possible for everyone. They still bark because the dogs opposite bark, and the dogs opposite bark because people going home from the pub after one or two too many and shouting at each other disturb them - and me!

contd.............

But the OP had a specific problem of dogs kennelled directly under a bedroom window, which does seem too much and I hope they will have support in getting it moved since it refers to "adjoining land" which suggests there may be a compromise available.

when i first bought my house 10 years ago ,there was a dog near by that barked the whole night setting all the dogs in the neighbourhood.i could of cried, every bark,my brain jumped up and down with it.i thought what the hell have i done .that dog eventually left the area,we do have neighbours with dogs but they are no problem at all, unless a stray wanders by,that sets the dogs off and the stray usually runs away.i do hear dogs barking in the distance but i think i must be use to it and it dosnt bother me any more.my first home in the uk backed onto a train line and when the trains went by the whole place shook, you felt as though the train was coming straight through your bedroom. but i got use to it eventually

What is wrong with useing a muzzle? Of couse to start with the dog will object, but with patience and training they get used to it. My neighbour uses Marmite in the Muzzle which the dogs seem to love. Result peacefull nights.

Keeping a dog in the closed mouth muzzle all night would be very cruel in my opinion. How would they pant to keep cool?

I forgot to add - I don't have any neighbours nearby. I have a field on one side and a huge field garden on the other and waste ground behind which is near the growing area. The nearest neighbour also has a dog which is also disturbed by the 'field' dogs.

As a dog trainer I know that you can train a dog not to bark just as you can train them to do/or not do many other things.

As for a Deaf Dog, well my friend that does not work either - My Springer Spanial is 13 and has gone deaf and he now barks more than he used to - however, he sleeps on my bed with our other dog. If our outside dog barks, (he has a purpose built kennel on the terrace - no room on the bed for this one) I immediately go down and tell her 'no barking' and she shuts up and I am able to check why she is barking (ie if there is an intruder around)

Hildy - it might be a nice idea if you could pass on some tips for other dog owners how to stop dogs barking.

Mine two established dogs are reasonable good - they not only bark if a someone approaches the gate but come to tell me if I dont hear the bell and dont respond and their body language tells me if it is a friend of a stranger - and they quieten down when they know I am aware... And they will usually quieten down when told if they join in other doggie choruses. But some things are too much for them - the dustcartdrives them mad, but forunately that is only twice a week, but when the cats start yowling nothing will stop the dogs till the cats go away.
