Does anyone know which of the Orphanides supermarkets in Nicosia is the largest one now that the hypermarket has now closed? Went to the express near the Metahan crossing but that is just a small store. Also not stopped there yet but what is the Metro centre?

Alpha Mega is quite a good store. From Metahan go to Olympic rings roundabout, turn left, down dual carriageway. Think it is 3rd set of traffic lights, on right, but look for McDonalds sign, right beside them, there is also a Carrefor down there with Debanhams, this is right at first set of traffic lights, at Debenhams turn right, big car park at rear.

Carrafour is our favourite, in the Engomi mall, not too far from the Metahan crossing.

We use the express store it may be small but we get super service. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them.

The Orphanides hypermarket in the mall on the road to the Highway in Nicosia hasn't closed.

If the one in the mall is open again that is great. Last went beginning of July and it was closed. You couldn't even get into the car park because it was all cordoned off.

Have to say that I think Alpha Mega is the best of the supermarkets in south Nicosia. Very good fruit and veg including quite a bit of stuff that you rarely see in the others - mange tout, lemon grass, raspberries and other soft fruit. They also stock quite a bit of imported veg which makes a change at this time of year when there is so little available.

Friday 9th Sept. Just got back from Orphanides great offers on Pork but of course I didnt buy any because you cannot bring it over the border. Lots and lots of offers.

Definitely not busy, do not see how it can last much longer, but open still as of today.

Journeys south are planned by pit stops, toilet stops, comes with the age. Nice one at the first Egnomi mall. the Jumbos have one, then Orphanides, Lidl's dont have one.

Been to Orphanidies today and spoke to a gentlemen that works there. He says they are not closing the supermarket, they are going to make the shop smaller and the Mall is going to be refurbished and new shops intruduced. Only time will tell

We go to Larnaca - they have both large Orphanides and Carrefour there - also Lidl now. When I went to Orphanides Larnaca last month they were now opening all day on Wednesdays. Don't know if this is just in Larnaca or whether it will apply to smaller stores eg Paralimni too.

The Ay Nik crossing in Famagusta is much better than Metehan so worth the trip perhaps ?

Went to Orphanides today and it was indeed open! Also tried the Metro and was very impressed. Although a lot smaller it is more like Cyprus's answer to Waitrose instead of Orphanides and Carefour more akin to Asda. In fact there were even a few item with the Waitorse labels on them!

From Larnaca direction, drive past the Orphanides mall and on same side, on the left, before the big crossroads, turn into The Metro. Hope that helps

I thought Metro were part of the cash & carry Makro group, re-branded in different EU Countries but needing a trade card to enter and purchase produce/products. Maybe the ROC have taken a leaf out of the TRNC and just ignore international trade name agreements contrary to what they are obligated to follow by Brussels dictates.
