Before I left the UK I spoke to a lady named Joan who had taken over one of our local pubs 'The Butchers Arms' in Chester Le Street, Co Durham. We discussed the Dog/Cat problems in TRNC and I explained what KAR was doing to help rescue animals. I ran a raffle and a lot of prizes were donated by the people of Great Lumley and the Butchers Arms. So when I moved here I brought with me over £350 worth of items; muzzles, leaders, collars, bowls, medication etc etc etc. The customers brought in lots of stuff which all went to KAR. Since then they have been keeping a tin on the bar to raise money for KAR. so last week I went in to see them and was presented with £100 to bring back to KAR. Joan has another customer from TRNC who visits the pub and has also kept her informed of what KAR does - she took on a rescue dog and I have taken 2.

If a few more people did the same thing, they would benefit a bit more. Joan was delighted to help out.

Hildy Smith..Was brought up not far away from Chester-le- Street in a village called Newfield,so Chester-le-Street was our local town.I took my wife up there for a weeks holiday last year and it was my first time back in40 years. It has not changed much except for the one way traffic system. It has always been said about the northerners that they will help out lost causes and I am glad you had that support for the KAR. Its apity the TRNC government did not help out a little more.Great job and wish you all the best for your efforts...

Chester le Street is a great place, and it has not changed much except for the road system, which is an improvement (for pedestrians). The shops are thriving there but not fairing so well in other parts of the north east. Loads of shops shuttered up, some whole blocks. Lots of churches and pubs for sale right up to the Dales - it is so sad. But Chester Le Street is as good as ever, had some great times on the Market which is excellent and great for a bit of banter especially when Sunderland and Newcastle are playing (like the other week) radios all over the market. It also has 6 charity shops in one street!!! and you can pick up some fantastic bargains I bought some goods and took some of my packed clothes into the shops - great way to update the wardrobe and get rid of some old stuff. I also did a Car Boot sale at Seaham sea front, for my 2 grandsons aged 7 and 9 and they earned £70 each, Boy were they happy.

The only claim to fame for Chester le Street is = Who wants to be a millionaire. The £1 million question was which cricket ground did England play/or did Durham play = and they got it wrong????? WE KNEW IT!!!!!!! It has a fabulous cricket ground - India played there the other week - got rained off!!!!!!!! So what's new!!!
