Behind this restaurant's posh exterior/interior, lurk waiters' with habits most inferior!

but how do you tell someone 'nicely' they smell unpleasant.

I bet people have had colleagues with funny smells coming from their breath or pores and do not want to upset them

I know this is very off putting and I wouldn't like to be served by someone who ponged but I think some of these waiters are paid so little. Perhaps they can only afford basic accommodation that don't have facilities to shower properly and just maybe they can't afford deodorant.

I don't think that's the reason BW I think its more to do with self respect its the same in the UK you see folk with the most awful teeth it looks like they have swallowed a box of Dominoes. You see people living in shit holes, ok they may not have much money but It doesn't cost a site to keep things tidy.

This brings back memories many years ago when I was an office worker, there was a girl who had the most appalling body odour, no-one would tell her and we would all just sit there gagging and opening windows, even in the winter.

Anyway, in the end, we put all our names into a box and the name drawn had to deal with it (human resouces manager included). I drew the short straw so to speak and was absolutely terrified of dealing with the problem, for a whole week I put deodorants in her drawer (with a bar of chocolate) to soften the blow, NO GOOD, she ate the chocolate and left the deodorants there.

I finally picked up the courage in the little kitchenette and told her very kindly and carefully that she smelled awful and that it was time that she did something about it. She was so upset and crying and so was I.

After comforting her, I told her to go home and sort herself out.

She did not come back that day, but we never had the problem again.

It really is awful to dea

It sure is Sue, we have a member in the family the same way, we all just keep saying surely he must be able to smell himself.

Well I never want to have to do that again. Its 30 years ago and I still remember it all so clearly. Thing is, the girl never held it against me. We worked together for another 5 years and she was fine.

What I will never understand is why her mum did not tell her, they had a pub so they had to be smart themselves.

If someone in my family stank, they would be told immediately and not in a polite way either, (ask my grandson)

I simply say, William, you absolutely pong, please go and have a shower. (glad I had girls)

suehowlittle. Sounds exactly the same situation I was in working in an office except the person who had the problem was married, our Manager had the job of telling her, she was upset and went home to bring her Husband in so the Manager had two people to deal with, we were never told what was said but the smell disappeared.

sueowlittle

I had a staff member in the '80's with the problem

The guy worked between two offices his boss and area manager would not tell him

The customers /Dealers that he saw regularly complained as well but nobody would do anything

The summer was getting warmer and the office smaller and smellier and a day out with him in a car a nightmare

take two cars if you could

I took the bull by the horns and spoke to him

He knew he had a problem but was not aware it was starting up again

It was medically based and the more he washed the worse it got just like rotten fish and stale fags

he started the medication and had his suits dry cleaned

Problem solved and every couple of months ask if there were any problems his idea not mine

To mkae it worse someone has nicked my air freshener. Is it a religious thing or can I say something, as I don't want ot be disrespectful.

Talking of waiters , maybe these people just have never been used to using deoderant in the past . So if thats the case family and friends will notice nothing as they will probably not use either.

These waiters work long hours in a hot climate in and out of hot smelly kitchens, often wearing thick formal clothing which itself may be the cause of the odour, and they probably cant afford a change. Even if they have bathing faciities at home (and many dont) they would need on site changing and showering facilities and breaks to keep sweet - and THAT would put the price of your meal up considerably!

I am just suprised that so many of them manage to keep as smart and inoffensive as they do!

At this time of year I seem to spend half my life washing sweat soaked clothes - but I can afford lots of cheap minimum iron changes and a washing machine , and I dont have to wear a "uniform" that probably needs pressing!

Some of the bigger restaurants give their staff time off to get changed and take a shower etc..... But I guess the smaller establishments can't do that.

Also some provide accomodation without all the basic amenities.......normally 4 to 5 in one apartment, no washing machine, no beds, (just sofas), no clean linen. I think they just do the best they can.......

Some don't even get paid !!!!

In my experience they shower up to 3 times a day, if they have the facilities available. You should be speaking to the bosses, and asking if they give time off for their staff to freshen up.

Occasionally a person may be suffering from anosmia, though one would think they would be aware of that.

When I worked in Iran, there was a girl in the Office, Moslem, who never washed in any way shape or form, when it was her time of the month - she adhered to the Islamic edict that women don't bathe at that time. At times, the stench was truly overpowering. Of course, like in any Faith, people decide what they will adhere to and what is, to their mind, risible - the majority of my female Moslem friends, even in those days, bathed daily.

Had a stall once at Lambousa & the guy behind us stank to high heaven, we had to keep telling the customers it wasn't us. It was such a relief when he went off & had a wander round.

hahahahahaha!!! So sorry, but this thread has really made me giggle! I know of loads of people who tend to smell quite a bit...try being on a dolmus at the end of the day...peeeOOOOOW!!

Thing is, after a hard days grafting,in this sort of heat, everyone is capable of smelling....including myself...but seriously, this is just part and parcel of living and working in a hot country...some people sweat very little, and others sweat gallons..... Have you never had a shower, and found yourself sweating immediately afterwards?? Sweat is produced to keep the body cool, therefore it makes total sense that folk from hot countries tend to sweat a lot more than the average European!

I think a little sensitivity is what is called for here.

I can belive it . . . many are treated like slaves living in tents beside or behind the bars with the only chance to bath being in the sea but after an 18 hours shift in the heat yep many do smell I would say find another watering hole

I'm Going to be a devils advocate now-but given that a lot of Brits love the bland British cuisine, I would have thought that the waft of cheese and the tang of dried sweat would make the bland British meal that many eat in TRNC taste positively exotic.....

bring it on.......

Cyprusjoker....wow what a BIG response. Im going to come clean.....In the UK I never sweat at all, even in my Step classes everyone sweat but not me. Since I moved to Cyprus I started sweating and smelt like a waiter, no matter how many showers I had and spraying with normal deod. Ive discovered Boots TRUST which blocks the smell. Buy some and tell the waiters to shower and then use TRUST. So give them as a present.

Personally I've always found purchasing the right brand of deodorant difficult,

The last time I asked for some deodorant the assistant in the chemist asked whether I wanted the Ball type.

To which I replied

"its for under my arms actually"

I think i should point out here that i have worked in many many bars and restaurants over the many years of being here (as a lot of folk can verify)....and i have never seen a waiter living in the sort of conditions you say they do! Most live in (albeit not very nice) apartments and village houses, some with families some with friends. The only really tough conditions that i have seen, are those folk from the mainland living in the buildings they are erecting...but there is still water on hand for washing...(think about how they mix the cement) So i shall reiterate....people that are from hot countries are going to sweat more than a European, it's perfectly natural as it's natures way of keeping cool!! OK, so some smell a bit more than others....but so what, it shows they are grafters...and besides, the Chinese say we Europeans smell like stale cheese!!

So, once again...please be a little more sensitive to our hosts, and don't boycott a place just because the waiter hums a bit!

If one waiter smells and the other one don't. what does that tell you? Unless they have a condition of course. I think some of the waiters smell because they don't wash their cloths often enough. Some of the waiters black trousers are absolutly shiny gloss black ! god knows what there knickers are like.

I worked in a restaurant with a really pongy waiter, but when he broke-wind it was really scented. I asked why this was so. He said that he did not know why he smelled so bad, he showed me th anti perspirat- deoderant that he used, and he pointed out that he followed, religiously the instructions on the container.
