Earlier today, member "kittyfun" used the word "piffle" in a comment and when I saw it, I thought, "I'll bet not many people have used that word on Cyprus 44"

I used the "Google Custom Search" feature (above) and searched for "piffle" and I discovered that according to the search results, it has only been used eleven times in 70 odd thousand threads which equates maybe, to well over a million postings.

Admittedly, it maybe a while since this site was last indexed for Google 'site' search and therefore, the results may not be 'bang' up to date, but even so, eleven times out of more than a million posts is not a lot so, according to the search results, who has used this word on Cyprus 44 ? :-

PtePike, No1Doyen, Groucho, Lazydays, Mickeyrourke, Ballyboffin, glencoe, ang1706, wynyardman and Moover321

I wonder, whether there is a connection between these members/moderators or, is this post just piffle ?

nicola......I agree, but as not many people have used that word, does it follow and is it reasonable to assume that the same person may have used it more than once or, twice, but using a different identitiy ?

The Urban Dictionary defines piffle as " The act of having sex in an Amplitheatre ! maybe that explains it's rarity ?

Perhaps words such as piffle and balderdash are now far too genteel for the modern generation. Things like "an urban dictionary" have crept up on an old fart like me. I have had to accept that aggression in most things is the modern way so I do not even blink when I now read communications punctuated by the likes of bollox, bilge, squit etc and I admit to responding in kind.

I think words do go full circle- It's only a matter of time before the kids realize that Piffle Is a good word and re-use it.

Only problem is when kids re invent words they have a different meaning-piffle will probably mean an attractive woman,or a dog with one ear and a limp.

Look what Bad now means in street slang for example- It now means good.

I have had some very confusing conversations with teenagers.

But think back to the 50s/60s when teens (who are now in their 60s /70s) were shocking their parents with words like- groovy & cool-must have sounded like Gibberish(which I believe has Yiddish origins).

Its a sign of getting old I suppose, not understanding what the next generation are talking about.

Whens the last time you ever heard anyone say-" Blimey" or "cripes"?

I recall my dad said at the dinner table that the screwdriver he bought was "Crappy" my mother remonstrated with him for swearing in front of the children-I remember thinking it was Bollocks at the time.

I just happened to have the Oxford English Dictionary by my side (so there!) and the definition is "silly, commonpace stuff" - it doesnt sound as if that is a good description of the UK weather at the moment.

Perhaps message 30 was confusing it with other words beginning "pi"

Eamonn -it's got nothing to do with grabbing tits-it means "Hello" In Lancashire.

I suggest you don't travel to Lancashire If you think that is an invitation to grab a Ladies Top Bollocks or you may find you have problems with the Lancashire constabulary.

I have enjoyed reading this thread, it brought back memories of bygone days when I was a nipper and stayed with my grandparents during the holidays. They lived in the wilds of Co Durham and their language was hard to understand at times. My grandfather used to say to me, hard thee wisht or I'll fettle thee gal. This was when I was talking to much at the table. I think it meant stop talking, else I would be in trouble.

'kerfuffle' That's one of my favourites....

I love it when Lou (Little Britain) uses it... in particular the visual joke when they are stranded on an island and Lou spells out a large sign which reads "Help...we are in a bit of a kerfuffle."

The public spanking you had in the Cyprus Star has obviously got to you-this together with your fraudulent activites in the South throws your personal credibility out of the window.

"fraudulent activites in the South"

Hold on Art... that's getting a bit close to libel, make sure you can back it up by something more substantial than gossip on another forum... fanciful gossip is often quoted as fact and it's simply not good enough.

re msg 66 Groucho..

don't 'spoil' my fun.. our MagicArt has been making quite a few bloopers and hilarious comments and when corrected - simply repeats 'em.. ;)

MagicArt.. try and explain ( for once) how the

1/ Cyprus Star 'articles' that 'spanked me' and discussed in full in Jack Lobbs 'right to reply' thread and

2/ his obvious 'internet problems' - ( his computer system 'serviced by your mate [ ;) ] ) prevented him from checking FACT - rather than posting 'fiction'... BEFORE writing the articles that completely misled it's readers...

3/ You'll note that a letter was published from ErolZ that politely informed the author of his 'mistakes'...

ALL you are doing is repeating a fib and you WILL look VERY silly....

6ms,

You forgot to mention that following the publication of EROLZ letter the Newspaper publised another article in which you got your backside smacked.

Understandably you have side-stepped this article but its too late the damage to your "I am the Peoples Champion" campaign was done.

Where are your supporters now?

Dear MagicArt

re 69

>>You forgot to mention that following the publication of EROLZ letter the Newspaper publised another article in which you got your backside smacked.<<

Nope! YOU forgot ( again) that the author was roundly pilloried on this very board and ironically entitled his thread, "right of reply" ... for those not comatose - the irony here is that the author - having made contact - never quoted ANY facts.. just the nonsense he'd been fed - something that poor MagicArt keep regurgitating ;)

In the meantime , I wonder if you'd care to explain why I'd need to be consulting a 'head doctor' ? ..... Is THAT your 'field of expertise' - it is clearly not satellite TV, TV rights, or Piracy thereof...

Message 55 (Play the music please from the Hovis advert)

when I was a nipper and stayed with my grandparents during the holidays. They lived in the wilds of Co Durham and their language was hard to understand at times. My grandfather used to say to me, hard thee wisht or I'll fettle thee gal. This was when I was talking to much at the table. I think it meant stop talking, else I would be in trouble.

- had thee wisht - keep quite!!!!

- I'll fettle thee gal - I will sort out out girl!!!

Also great in the wilds of Durham when greeting someone:

- Now then!! - Good Morning/Good Day/Good Afternnoon/Hello

- Now!! - and abreviation to all of the above......

- Am out o fettle - I am not feeling very well

- Dinnit dee that - don't do that!!

- ah divvent nar - I don't know

Its a load a ard piffle...........................

Dear one of the Zeroes

>>Why don't you leave poor Erolz out of your post's<<

Er, because it was a pertinent 'counter' to MagicArt's 'misinfo' ?

>>sure he has had alot of stress brought on by you recently<<

If you mean his 'foolishly' entering the fray to back up what I said, then you question suggests any 'stress' may well be sourced elsewhere....

I LIKE the fact that he tries to communicate and reason face to face with an 'adversary' and only a VERY 'silly' person would claim he was a 'stalker'.. [ emoticon for eyes rolling in exasperation ]

ErolZ is a nice chap and hopefully any self imposed vacation from this board will not be too long - as his contributions are ( largely ) respected and sought after.....

Dear another Zero ..could be the same one - who knows ?

re msg 79

>>Nice to hear you talk some truths for once<<

You, naturally, being an arbitrator of such weighty matters .... [ emoticon for ironic smile ]

>>Maybe you should take a leaf out of his book<<

..Not JUST me, eh? - I didn't see you jumping to his defence when untrue things were being posted about him.. and his earnest attempts to explain. THAT might have helped...
