That gardening should be classed as an extreme sport!!

In the last year, i have had numerous spider bites, ant bites, stings, cuts, slices and gashes...not to mention 2 hospital visits to rehydrate myself! Also serious loss of weight due to being too hot and too knackered to eat. Sunburn, sunstroke and callouses....unsightly swellings in sensitive places! Oleander poisoning in the eye...not to mention the nightmares of slithering vipers through the undergrowth!!

At this very moment of typing, i have a massive swelling on the back of my neck from some sort of bite, an infected heel from a bourganvillea prickle....and...AND....CHIPPED SODDING NAILS!!!

If anyone deserves a day in a relaxing spa...i vote for me!!!

Does anyone else think that gardening is an extreme sport??? What more sort of injuries should i look forward to??

But i'm still smiling...why...coz i love it...i love tending a garden!!

Martin...you are obviously not an avid gardener...too dry?????? The indigineous plants here, are more than used to dry seasons, and therefore cope very well, and never stop growing!!

I always say if you planted a pencil over here, it will grow.

After working as a florist in Uk, I find it totally amazing that I am growing plants in my garden here that I paid a fortune for in Uk. Stephanotis is growing like a weed at the moment, awesome. Lucky me.

Nice post DD, don't worry about the nails, they too will grow back, haha

flowerfairy - no pencils, think of the lead in your soil lol. I am sure if you researched there would be a plant that thrives on lead.

Gardening, so relaxing, so rewarding, great.

What a nice topic daisy dukes.

Flowerfairy....i adore stephanotis!! You are so lucky.....i only have a courtyard, that has full sun in the summer, and full shade in the winter...therefore it's super hard for me to have anythng grow well...however, i take much delight in other peoples gardens....

If it's possible, i'd love some cuttings...i hate to buy stuff knowing theres more chance of it dying than living. I once bought a snail vine for 50tl...it lasted a week.....i was absolutely gutted!!

Today i'm off chopping down an out of control bourganvillea...no doubt i shall come hme with several more injuries...aaah, the joys!!

Daisy Dukes, If you have genuinely suffered all those things, then I can only say, You are truely a cypriot gardener, welcome to the club!!!

Sounds like a job for a full 'elf n safety' inspection team to carry out a proper risk assessment. Suggest you take things very very easy and carefully until said team arrives some time in around 2014. Meanwhile you could read a few Alan Titmarsh books whilst sipping a cool beer.

I bought a house with a "garden" which was bare earth (not even weeds) apart from one very straggly rose bush and three sad fruit trees surrounded by bare walls topped with wire mesh(for the dogs safety). I spent a year begging, watering feeding and generally nursing a few cuttings.

I have spend another thirteen years, pruning, cutting, splitting pricking out, and in extreme cases digging out and giving or even throwing throwing way the result of said cuttings, to prevent being totally surrounded by jungle!

pc...i have absolutely definitely suffered all of the above...so i guess i'm a true Cypriot gardener now...(except i'm one of the reliable ones!! lol)

Hector, not sure about the 'elf n safety'....but several cold ones later....hey presto, injuries are all healed!! (Just need to find an Alan Titchmarsh book...i'm assuming you 'don't' mean the gardening one?? ;)))

BizziLizzi...i'm betting your garden looks fabulous now....it would be great if you could load your pictures for us all to see....in fact, it would be brilliant if all those avid gardeners could load a few pictures to show us what you've all accomplished.....

Come on everyone, show us what you've got!!

When I moved to Cyprus I brought my 20 year old Barbour jacket because I couldn't bear to part with it - although I never imagined it would be used. But it has found a second life because it is bougainvillea proof. All my neighbours borrow it to prune theirs.
