Hi all,

First time posting so be gentle with me!

Anyway, I was born in Cyprus and really want to return to the island permanently. I have family in the North so relocating would not be a problem.

Are there any recruitment sites online that display current jobs that are available? Failing that, I am coming over to the North for 10 days very soon so I could hand my CV to businesses on both sides of the island and see if I get any feedback - is this advisable?

Any other advice would be much appreciated - the best places to look for work etc?

I am a qualified journalist and have been working as a reporter/social media editor for the past four years since leaving university.

I'm not necessarily looking for work as a journalist/reporter and I would be more than happy to do office work etc?

My girlfriend is a graphic designer, also with four years experience in the industry, and she would be looking for work as well - again, not necessarily in the design industry.

Thanks in

benmidd,

Are one or both of your parents Cypriot? If so, you may be required to complete Military Service if you stay longer than 60 days per annum in North Cyprus.

The reason I mention it is that most jobs I've seen advertised in the past for larger organisations state as one of the requirements that Military Service obligation must be completed to be considered.

Good luck!

Link to information re Military Service: http://mucahit.net/asal/ingilizce.htm

Might apply to you if you were born in TRNC.

Hi zcacmxi,

Neither of my parents are Cypriot. However, both my parents have served with the British Army in Cyprus - that is how I came to be born on the island.

Thanks for the info.

Ben

You should be ok then, unsure if you'd need a work permit but I'm sure you'll find that out once you find a job...

From time to time I've seen jobs advertised in Kibris Newspaper.. Also, some companies have a "careers" section of their own websites.

The Turkish jobs site: http://www.kariyer.net has a drop down to select for jobs in North Cyprus too. I've just run a search and 34 jobs have come back from the likes of Turkcell / Vodafone / etc

Ability to speak Turkish would be a huge bonus. Due to the shortage of jobs in the TRNC 'foreigners' are not encouraged.

If you are relying on getting a job, do check out the work permit situation before you commit yourself.

The regulations have been tightened recently and I think it is very difficult for a foreigner to get a permit.

I dont think being born on the Island will help if neither of your parents are Cypriot.

Sorry to be discouraging but it is better to be sure before burning your boats.

I believe you also have to prove a source of income before you get can a residence permi*t so , since you are too young for a pension, you need a private income or considerable savings, or a guaranteed job.

* check this, I am not sure if it applies to temporary residence

Hi philbailey and BizziLizzi,

Yep only 27 and was born at RAF Akrotiri - so the Rep of Cyprus. Really want to return to the island but obviously would need to find work.

BizziLizzi, don't worry your not being discouraging, any information is really appreciated. I don't have a lot of savings and that is why I am looking for a permanent job on the island.

Keep it coming, I am grateful for any help and information. I am heading out to Cyprus next week....do you think if I take along my CV and hand it in to businesses this could be an option? Or is this not the way to go?

Cheers - B
