I was in my village early yesterday evening when a Cypriot frind came rushing out of her house to see me.I realised instantly that something was wrong but my Turkish is limited and her English is zero.

She led me around the back of her house on to waste ground where a dog was dying of poisoning.

She says her neighbour had just set food which contained the poison.

.

I asked her to call the local police and report it but she said they would not do anything.

the neighbour IS A POLICEMAN

What chance do we have of stopping this cruel killing when the law is in on it???

Get in touch with KAR with all the details, they may be able to do something, this is shocking, especially near homes where children may be.

Well we stand no chance of things like this changing here do we? This should be reported and he should be made an example of...this is totally unacceptable behaviour. There is no excuse at all for this cruelty.

Is it actually against the law though? I ask because I reported my dog being poisoned in my garden (by a neighbour) and they did nothing. I would think that if it's YOUR dog and therefore YOUR property, you could maybe report that your property was destroyed but as for the actual poisoning, is it against the law?? I am beginning to doubt it.

the policeman is top rank in Lefkosa-where we all go for our police checks for residencies!!!!!

he uses the property in our village for week-ends and family breaks.

I doubt the lower ranking cops would dare to challenge him.

I have 3 dogs of my own......I dare not risk poison coming in our garden by taking a stand against this barbaric cruelty.

My husband made it plain when we moved in, that any poisoning of our pets would result in him committing murder --no matter what the concequences were to him.

Heathens, that is why I rarely come to N. Cyprus now, the place is a 3rd world rubbish tip where a lot of the local people has no respect for animals.

Pity someone can't poison that copper.

Rosylee, are you sure theres not a mis-understanding between you both?you said your turkish is limited and hers is zero, could she not be pointing towards the policeman because he could translate to you both? was this policeman seen feeding the dog? if so,why did she let him feed her dog? are you 100% sure its poison or could it have been a snake bite?im not saying what you've said isnt true .but you could have jumped to the wrong conclusion, forgive me if im wrong.

Vonny even if there is some confusion over this sad episode, poisoning is a frequent occurance in Cyprus and it will never change, it's the mentality of the people, very sad but very true.

Hi all.....I have my facts correct as my understanding of the Turkish language is much better than I speak it.It was not my friends dog.....although she is cypriot, she has a good heart for animals. The dog was a stray .she always puts out left-overs for any animal passing her garden.I think she will stop doing so now as it is too dangerous for them to be around the properties. She will not report him as she has to live in the village only 2 doors away from him.what a sad state of affairs eh?

I wish we had a council to round up the strays and a cremetoruim for after the "jab"....maybe I could stomach what happens that way ...I don't know.It can't be the will of Alah to cause suffering to an innocent animal.

The dog licencing is cheaper if your dog is spayed/neutered....so why doesn't it happen ???

Please Alah.....! tell all those that have killed in such a vile way, that they will go through the same pain before they can enter your heaven.

in mexico its electrocution.....Ukraine ..drowning....Turkey ..hanging or poison ...in the french island of Reunion they use strays as shark bait.....Afghanistan as target practice in the army.............China anything that involes pain!!! wherever there are humans , there will be pain inflicted on animals that are not needed......Cyprus is no different, it happens all over the world, not just 3rd world countries........so its not just the mentality of Cypriots bit all man kind !!!

So that makes it acceptable does it, how very sad, the question is rhetorical.

Yes, much as I hate and deplore cruelty to animals, I also deplore the anti Cypriot rants on the subject. The RSPCA can tell some pretty horrible stories about cruelty to animals - the difference is that the RSPCA has powers to prosecute.

Nicola, no it does not make it acceptable!!give me an hour with any one who has cruelly treated an animal and i will give them worse than they could ever imagine.

Yes i know the question was rhetorical , but for once Nicola i agree with you !!, it dosent make it ok!!! it makes me sick with anger !!!!
