Members of the Public who walk dogs on the tracks leading to the mountains on either side of the ravine to the south of St Tropez restaurant in Alsancak should be aware, and on the alert, that 10 full plastic bags of poison [wheat-grain-like in appearance] were found recently on the side of the eastern 'road'.

The label reads:

"Contains BROMADIOLONE a potent rodenticide, second generation 4-Hydroxycaumarin derivative, often called a super warfarin. Added potency and a tendency to accumulate in the liver of the poisoned organism. Used to kill rats and mice. Can be absorbed through digestion through the lungs (breathed in) or on skin contact. Vitamin K is the antidote."

Should you find any packets do not risk touching them with bare hands ... please use a piece of plastic rubbish left on the roadside to hold them ... and then scrub your hands extremely well afterwards.

As a result of coming into contact with this 2 dogs were poisoned - 1 died and 1 survived.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL.

Please keep this at the top - it is a very very nasty "super" poison. It will cause problems if it comes into contact with human skin - let alone if ingested by animals (or even worse - adults/child).

How many of us would like to have a 'word' with these heroes who do such inhuman things?

Would be happy to give them a taste of their own medicine.

Saw the report in the paper. Horrified!

Its a pity this wasnt found by a tourist -one with the sense not to touch it of course! I dont mean any harm just that a complaint by someone bringing income might have more force with the authorities.

Hamish have you reported this to anyone ? Sounds like it needs to get picked up by the bin men or some other department ASP.

No spider I don't think letting the bin men pick it up from the office is a very good idea at all, sorry. They'll more than likely use around some of the bins they empty to keep rats away. Believe me I handled the stuff and bin men are not to ones to deal with it. I'm sure the office will dispose of it in the correct and safe manner. What needs to be ascertained is, who put it there and where did they obtain it?

Would the Environmental Health people be the ones to report it to , and to dispose of the poison.

10 bags of the stuff is a very serious hazzard for humans as well as animals - (although it may ultimately have been intended to be split up for animal poison) it sounds as if it was dumped for some reason and I think in these circumstance the Police might be more interested than usual.

Has a 'formal' report been made to the authorities. Often nothing is done if they have not 'received' a formal 'complaint/report'.

From the picture in the paper it looks exactly like what the Belediyesi used for the tree rats. five years ago i followed the van with two men stood in the back throwing it out onto hedge rows and rough land but told it was safe as it was mixed with corn and there was a vermin problem and the bags were clearly marked with the skull and crossbones therefore showing danger.

spider

After years of campaigning the relevant authorities and Gvmt to stop the use, and indiscriminate sale, of poison i am sure that KAR are aware of the process they need to go through in order to complain about this recent finding.

Their first concern is to warn members of the public so they can try and protect themselves and their pets.

The whole investigation (and complaint) takes, as per usual here, time and lots of paperwork, telephone calls and knocking on many doors only to be told to go on to the next one ! Often with no suitable answers at the end - but they will, i am sure, be doing everything they can to get to the bottom of it.

If the bags were unopened, maybe they were put there for distribution later by the authorities? I Remember back in the Uk one snowy winter, the council threw sacks of salty-grit at the side of the road every few feet or so. A couple of hours later the men with shovels appeared.

One of the most valuable lessons you can teach your dog is to NEVER pick up anything in their mouth while walking. It won't help the street dogs - but may save your pets life. Its one of the lessons you can learn at Lena's dog training courses.

Unfortunately the bags appeared to be made of biodegradible plastic and were splitting. As you say they were mixed with grain. However, not many dogs in my experience can read or would recognise what a skull and crossbones means. Any young child who is a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean would recognise the symbol and think it great to pick it up. This abhorrent behaviour is not going to stop until someone is killed. Tragic but unfortunately true.

Message 22

is quite right - you can train your dogs not to touch items, people or other dogs when walking. Simply you the word

LEAVE!!!!!!!

Use a hard, firm, loud. voice - it works if you keep doing it. Practice with a toy and then give him/her permission to go and get it.

Would that I had eyes at the back of my head when I take our four out for a walk, even on long leads its well nigh impossible to see what all four are sniffing at, at all times.
