According to the locak newsagency TAK three GCs were arrested today near Kormachit village for fishing with fishing rods with no licences. Apparently they are resident in the south. So it seems that foreigners are not allowed to fish without a licence. Very bizarre but tourists beware.

They are persons without fishing licenses, wherever you are you must obey the local laws.

We've needed licenses for quite a while now. About 150tl I was told, unofficially. You see the police at Girne harbour checking, occasionally.

6m's....if they are from the South, and were fishing here, then yes, that makes them tourists...South Cyprus is a whole other country don't you know?

Russianbabe/6m,

Do the GCs have to show id cards or passports to cross over to TRNC? If yes, then they are "foreigners" as far as TRNC is concerned.

Come on Marky, you of all people know they had to cross a *border* to get to *TRNC* from that *un-occupied area*

I thought anyone other than Turkish speaking Cypriots required a licence to fish here.

Was this law not introduced within the last year ?

Foreigners? They were Cypriots! As someone else has commented on, they could have been on their own land for all we know. If so, can you imagine the publicity that such an action could provoke? Once again the TRNC authorities put themselves in a position where they could be shooting themselves in the foot.

They do excel at this though, don't they? A common sense approach was all that was needed.

If a Turkish Cypriot travels to the south, are they not treated as a foreigner/tourist?? why should it be any different if a GC travels here, to the north?

A Greek ID card - surely not! Do you mean a RoC/GC ID card?

As it seems you need a fishing licence in the south, no matter what your ethnicity why should the TRNC not require like for like?

So if the 3 GC.s need a fishing licence in the south, did they think they could just come to the north to do free fishing?or maybe they thought we were too soft and they would get away with it.

More than likely they came North in order to sit on the coast in the sunshine for hours without a licence, in the sure and certain knowledge that they would catch nothing anyway.

I used to own a carvan on a site in Weardale in Co Durham. it was on the side of the River Wear (Wee a)

and therefore I had fishing rights. HOWEVER, if I wanted to fish there I had to buy a permit/licence from the local post office

So what's new...................................

Thow shalt have a fishy on a little dishy, thow shalt have a fishy, when the boat comes in!!!!!!!!!!
