BREAKING NEWS 17.NOV.08

The Cyprus national Guard have said the origin of a mortar shell which fell on a house in the Agios Dometios area at 10.30am was from northern Cyprus.

The missile, which was 21 millimtetres in size, is of Turkish origin and is a of type used by occupation forces in the north.

Ayios Dhometios is the site of the island's most important checkpoint, through which thousands of Greek and Turkish Cypriots pass every day.

It is also a heavily populated area, with tens of thousands of residents.

No comment has been made by the Turkish Cypriot authorities. - Copyright © Famagusta Gazette 2008

Never heard of a Mortar shell less than 50mm, the current smallest issued to the

British Army is 51mm. Would suggest 21mm is not a mortar. (usual Greek Cypriot Propaganda ?)

Maybe a ricochet from Greek Bulls--t. ?

If Pike is Suzanne (or vice versa) then he is a cleverer man than most give him credit for! He is cunningly making dreadful spelling mistakes in his postings to throw everyone off the trail (a smoke screen maybe, if you'll pardon the pun) LOL

fire starter,suzanne,pike

You are all the same person,it is probable that this will be my last posting after my next sentence.

The postings over the months by fire starter, suzanne, pike have been left on this forum, when some should have been removed

As a group,we have replied to there postings for one reason, and sure enough, our posts were removed along with the posters.

As we thought they would be.

Which makes us think that the moderators are them or colluding with them

Churches being changed into mosques - why is that a problem??? Is all the same God - is just a different style of worship - the changing of mosques to churches and back again has been going on for a long time - since Christianity and Islam came to the Ottoman lands- back in the days when all lived peacefully as one - before other nations interfered.......mmm...

At least it means the buildings are maintained - and IF the island is ever unified and the Turks sent back to Turkey then I'm sure the mosques will all go back to churches - minus whatever valuables they held.......... which I doubt was much......

Much better than them being turned into pubs and restaurants which is a HUGE insult to an original mosque - not that the Jews in Israel seem to care about this - selling mosques to be changed into bars..... again the work of a foreign nation - and still the killing continues..............................

Groucho

We just got through metahan as fire engine passed us,we followed minutes later and it was at a house along with several police cars, a small point from other half, mortars are measured in diameter and smallest is approx 2 inch in diameter which would fit with 21 -24 mm.

If the mortar was a blank... how could it do "so much damage" it would be no more damaging dropping out of the sky than a ball pein hammer if not less...

Yes it is an unfortunate and dare I say silly thing to have happened and no doubt the culrpit will be suitably chastened... I would have thought the best thing would be for said person be made to put right what damage there is... as it's his fault... reparation is something I think we can all identify with when we are the victims of petty crime.

There is obviously some hype in this story but as the Turkish army has admitted culpability, I don't think we can argue that the report, however lacking correct figures to back it up as it is (and 21mm does not sound a like a mortar shell) should be treated as untrue..

It must be accepted at face value as a seriuosly unfortunate turn of events given the delicate negotiations going on... let's hope it's not used as an excuse for intransigence on the part of either side...

According to the Cyprus Mail

""IT WAS a lucky miss for one Nicosia resident yesterday morning as a Turkish mortar shell crashed through her roof and into her bedroom while she was at work."

"An announcement by the Defence Ministry described the shell as an “81mm, mortar projectile of Turkish origin”.

The shell was a blank ie no explosives in it.

The Chipping Sodbury Gazette says it contained Depleted Uranium, Cluster Bombs and Agent Orange.

It was apparently launched by mistake by Jeremy Clarkson while filming for Top Gear trying to destroy a Caravan in Lapta!

He has seriously apologised, but promised it will be shown in the next series!

suzanne....my sentiments as well. Is there no compassion in this world any more?

Makes you wonder if people would have responded with some of the comments if lives had been lost.

It does not matter which side of the island it is...it's happened and I for one am pleased that it was not worse than it could have been.

No-one was hurt, not even a puppy!

If there had been casualties, there would have been compassion.

This story is basically an exploited wind up from a minor incident and invites a comical response.

Meanwhile, how Many are dying or being injured on the roads of Cyprus, North & South?

Last year there was a case in the UK where a lump of frozen toilet waste from an airliner crashed through the roof of a house in Essex. No-one was injured, so it became a joke issue.

Would you have considered that a 'lack of compassion'?

Extracts from Online Papers.

One says it hit a roof then fell on the ground.

Other says it made a noise.

How many versions of the truth are there?

The Famagusta Gazette Online..............

Cyprus police are trying to discover the origin of a mortar shell which fell on a house in the Agios Dometios area at 10.30am.

The projectile hit the roof of the house and then fell into the the yard.

Cyprus Mail Internet Edition

Panicked neighbours rushed to call emergency services as the practice shell – which fortunately wasn’t live – flew over the Green Line from the north, causing what witnesses described as a “deafening crash” as it came down.

Must be a rather limited "revenue stream", given the location for your avatar pic must be one of the cheapest budget, most exclusively Brit expat and non-Turkish Cypriot venues in Kyrenia. ;-)

Unfortunately our John (Pikey) does not practice what he preaches. I thought all hacks would have carried out a little bit of research before committing pen to paper. Tell me John where the heck did you think that location was in Girne?

Maybe you should get out a little bit more and aquaint yourself with the real TRNC.

Macka, Macka, Macka,

Don't you realise foul mouthed abuse is against the rules of this BB? You must try and control yourself. Your behaviour here reminds me of the drunken violence and yobbery in Ay Nap caused by your fellow squaddies. Nobody wants them and they end up getting banned, if you follow the drift. Concentrate on the old revenue stream - although from your recent conduct the main stream from you would presumably be against a wall. ;-)

Pike --Suzanne and her Greek friends are coming to get you out of your stolen Greek property. There not going to give a fig about any bits of paper you think you have, once Greek mob rule starts you wont stand a chance.

Here we go again, who can sink the lowest and drag the thread from information/debate to name calling and personal attacks, time to look for another source of information on TRNC, this one is washed up.

Suzanne reported a newsworthy item, which I was not aware of. It is not something which happens frequently and therefore I found it interesting and somewhat disturbing. My view would have been the same wherever this incident took place.

As the thread develops we are back to the personal and very juvenile name calling. This aspect is something Wyn has been 'campaigning' against.

Wyn, forgive me but I was a little disappointed in your comment in msg 80. You were aware that it was insulting and therefore perhaps you could have helped to put a stop to it.

The comment that firestarter has 'multiple personalities' is incorrect. What she does have, however, is a well balanced outlook. She has knowledge on the subject of Cyprus and I for one have learned many things from her, on this and other forums.

I agree, that all of this juvenile "slanging" should cease. I must state again, that this has not been reported in any press medium other than GC publications ( well I havent seen it anyway, I have asked and none of the "experts" have responded). Surely if a mortar was fired into the South from the North then this would be a major news story and it would have been picked up?

Hi all..back to this "blank" mortar round.Surely when a blank is fired no projectile leaves the barrel, just the sound.,no projectile no explosion on landing hence no damage. When I was with armed forces and doing firing exercises all we had was al ot of noise and nothing else.If that had been a "live" round there would have been alot more damage to the ladies house than has been stated. The nearest munition that comes to mind is a 20mm cannon shell which alot of armoured personell carriers use.We also used them on our fighters in the RAF and they caused alot of damage when they hit a ground target. So a blank morter shell seems to be a load of rubbish to me....,

suzanne msg115

probably because the North doesn't try to make propaganda out of the slightest little incident like the South does. Bet the South didn't report about the TC Taxi driver who got beaten up by a group of GC dickheads. I wonder why!!!!!!!!

Maybe by "blank" they meant dud i.e. the projectile didn't explode on impact. Still, firing blanks is nothing new to some of our members.

This whole thread makes me laugh, all of you are so wrapped up in trying to score points so much so that you have all lost the plot. Lets have hard facts and who is willing to supply them?. Let an unbiased person post the facts from what ever information is available. John you disgrace yourself and after all you are supposed to be a hack. Get working and post whatever you can find from your associates here and it should be totally unbiased. Now why do I think that will not happen?

Hey Suzanne

My rod 'n' reel is more than long enough to reel you in. Would not be able to fight for long and then you would have to give in.

With refernce to the training mortar round fired into the south, the day it happened I was down near Lefkosa and saw the army training with their mortars not far from the border, yes they where actually 81mm mortars. I know this as I have work with the UN in cyprus and have been to various military establishments both north and south.
