It's never a good idea to buy logs by 'weight'. Always buy by volume and look for seasoned logs. 3 tons of fresh cut logs will often give only 50% of heat output compared with seasoned logs and weigh 50% more. I see membuh is selling olive and carob, if they are seasoned, they will be far better value than unseasoned. Also, olive and carob are reasonably 'hardwood', other suppliers may be selling you a high propotion of pine/softwood, which will again cost you dearly for heat output versus cost. Always try to buy and store your logs for 'next' winter, not 'this' one.

Martin, Chris, thanks for the replies but in Cyprus they use cubic tones as it is in the forestry department, also Is the wood dry wood and what type of wood is it because a lot of people just take a chainsaw and cut live trees so they sell it cheap my wood is good quality dry cut wood thanks again memduh.

Also remember that burning fresh cut/softwood can tar up your flue faster than you can call a fire engine! 3 ton from memduh could well be far cheaper and far more heat efficient than 3 ton of fresh cut logs.

memduh,msg5.. Perhaps it would be better if you advertised logs per "Cubic" ton,as this is a measure of Volume and not Weight..selling your logs at 200TL per "TON" is rather misleading ...

martinD41 In msg 2 you were asking for weighbridge 'tonnage', now you're asking for cubic volume. Make your mind up! I purchase logs in Yorkshire by half/full loads, not by tonnage, but I check logs before delivery. If the supplier has a 10'X6' trailer and the logs are stacked 18" high for a full load, you can work out the Cubic capacity, but not the calorific content depending on whether the load is seasoned or fresh cut/softwood. Sounds to me that Memduh is selling seasoned logs. That is why his logs may be far better value than many 'half priced' loads being offered.

1. Order the logs. 2. Look at the size of the load delivered. 3. Look the man in the eye. 4. Pay the man. 5. Have a look at the logs for dry/fresh/size/quality/wood type. 6. Burn the logs. 7. Happy, call the man and let him know - order more for this/next year. 8. Shake the man's hand. 9. Unhappy - call the man and let him know - don't buy from him again. 10. Chill (bad word for winter) out and try things different- its a wonderful life. Burn well seasoned "hard" woods where possible, buy twice as much as you need this year and save half for next year - next year burn last years wood first till your rotation plan catch's up.

gromit msg14...Memduh was kind enough to explain in msg5 that the 1 ton load is actually 1 Cubic Ton or 40 cubic feet. I simply pointed out that it would be better for him to advertise the logs at 200TL per "Cubic" ton and not per ton...The reason is that Cubic ton measurements are no longer used in the UK and there may be some confusion..

Thanks again for all the replys, I appreciate that your only giving advice Martin but in cyprus when you say ton it doesn't mean weight I am not trying to rip anybody off I'm just trying to make some money to put food on the table if you would like to see my wood and let me and everybody know what you think I would be more than happy to show you. memduh.

My dear memduh, I never hinted that there was a rip off, I a simply saying that if you sell logs to Brits, they will be looking for a "Ton" of logs and not a Cubic ton....Unless you advise them .... the very best of luck with your enterprise.

Memduh, Last year I paid 300tl for 3 "tons" of mixed logs from the forestry, they were OK and lasted the winter in my log burner. I like the idea of your logs, but at the moment I cannot convince myself to pay nearly double the price? Are you saying that your logs would last that much longer? Sorry, a log is a log to me if it burns OK. Of course I am not an expert like yourself.

stokiefan, Think you missed the point with the types of wood available. Olive and Carob are probably the hardest woods you will get here and if seasoned as well will burn longer and hotter than any other wood that you can easily get hold of. Having said "easily" I am a little wrong there as both Olive and Carob are much sought after for use in fires and can sometimes be very scarce indeed. I normally buy between 6 and 10 tons (metric) of wood every year and last year I stuck with a eucalyptus and pine mix which worked well, burnt fairly slow and without too much smoke or tar deposit. This year I am mixing 6 tons of eucalyptus with 2 tons of Olive/Carob to see what that is like. It is all down to your wood burner/open fire which wood you want to use and a little bit of practice to see which burns the best - and of course which works out to be best value for money! Eucalyptus and pine mix costs me around 100TL a ton and Olive/Carob mix works out at 200TL a ton.

Waddo, if I may ask ,where do you weigh the timber, you say you buy 10 tonnes (metric).I thought the logs came by "Cubic" Ton.or 40 cubic meters............

martin, See post 15. You will drive yourself insane here trying to figure out if a "Truck Full" weighs 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 tons it is all down to experiance really. If you - having had logs delivered already - looked at the quantity in the truck, then on the ground, then stacked up ready for use (maybe after you chopped some as well) and were happy with the amount your next step is to burn the things. If you burn them and they give you good heat and don't just flare away or sit and smoulder like Olive stump wood often does and you are happy with them, then buy your major amount from the same guy next time. Always buy from two different people every year as that spreads the money around the local people, gives you something to measure against and increases your experiance in wood buying and preperation. Give up the idea of trying to buy in weight - see the cheese packets that are 700Gms + or - 10% but we all still buy it! Its good experiance to buy wood - don't make it a ch

Me too and although not always happy with the content or the amount, over the years experiance has proven a far better weapon than advice - in the main. Each country is different and trial and error generally point the way forward till you are happy. http://www.carbonneutralfuel.com/firewood-buying-guide.html

Just took a delivery of 3 tons or whatever you want to call it from Memduh logs. All I can say is that it seems to be a fair amount for the money and should last the winter and unlike previous deliveries it is all good sized, good quality, well seasoned olive wood with a few carob logs. Thank you Memduh - see you next year!

I would think its probley lemon tree and grapefruit or maybe even a mix with orange which burns quick so you would have to buy 6 tons which would cost you more money and you would have to find somewhere to store the wood where as if you got 3 tons of olive and carob wood it gives out more heat and lasts longer Memduh.
