Hi, My desktop will not power up. It did yesterday. Took it apart and when plugged in nothing starts fans etc or hard drive. tried changing power cables and sockets still no good so must be power supply unit. I need a power supply for my desktop, ideally I need an: EZCOOL Super Silent ATX-550 JSP, anyone know where I can get one and rough idea of cost?

Comaks or Laconic should be your best bet John, Go for one with a good rating circa 600 Watt so that it's not struggling. The recent power cuts and surges probably are to blame for the demise of your last one.... As a result of the power problems we lost a UPS recently :( - but at least it saved all the kit attached to it...

Com-Aks is more likely than Laconic because they sell everything to build your own PC.

If you get 'nothing' when pushing the power on button on your desktop and you have checked it is plugged into the wall socket, socket itself is switched on and have checked the fuse in the wall plug if it has one, then it is most likely that the power supply is dead. However it is possible for a power supply to appear to be dead according to the above and to not actualy be dead. For example if the on off switch on the desktop PC case itself has failed it would also show the same symptoms, switch on and nothing happens. So before buying a new power supply it might be worth double checking the pwer supply is itself dead. One way to do this would be to remove the power supply entirely from the case. With it seperate from the case , in order to test it without a specialist tester you would need to short togeather two pins on the 20/24 main connector to the moterboard.
