Posting on behalf of a friend, who was asking if you can still use a UK bank account when applying for residency,as she has only a small amount of cash here in Cyprus, and she done this last year with no problems, but as you are well aware the rules do change here all the time.

Many thanks

Basically, it's up the police officer. We call it face control. I applied in 2006 with only TL20 in my bank account and had no problem.

As Msg. 2 said, much depends on who is in attendance on the day your friends starts the proceedings. However, one thing I can say that you would never get away with 250tl these days. What they look at is to see that you have sufficient (in theire eyes) to live on. We took one of our KKTC bank statements last year which obviously had sufficient in it for two people but others I know have just taken one UK bank statement with them and a nominal TRNC statement. There doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule. Nothing is a straight forward as that!!

It's like most other things here - nobody knows the answer! I have never shown them my UK bank account. My local account shows very little movement which would indicate that I don't live out of it. They have never had anything to say about this situation in all the years that I have been here. What does seem to me to be possibly relevant is whether you have a kocan. I have had a kocan for years and have never had any financial questions asked whereas friends without kocans seem to have this problem. Usual TRNC mystery I guess.

Strange isnt it? How can a Kocan help you to provide for your daily living expenses? Do they think if you run out of money you can just sell the house? You would starve while you wait for that to happen.

My friend went today and produced her uk bank statements and they were excepted, but they said she would need to deposit at least 500tl into a local bank account and show this in Nicosia in 2 weeks time.

I do remember many years ago they asked for this in case you were deported and this would pay for the air fare.
