Hi, can anybody help. I'm thinking of bringing my Vivaro Van over. Its an 06 registration. In the UK its worth about £5000 and its mint. What import tax would I be liable to pay, and would it be worth it. Or a Chrysler Jeep Patriot. Thanks, constructive advice would be welcome.

I believe if your car is taxed for 12 months you can use it on the island until the tax runs out then take it back to the uk change it for another car tax it for 12 months and start again.

Quite a lot of driving twice a year but a cheap way to have a good car.

Not 100% sure if this is true but I think we will soon find out.

I do not think it is worth bringing it over. We did it and enjoyed the journey (except the ferry ) but definitely cost wise, not worth it.

When you are due to pay for import duties would differ on how many days you had spent on the island already, hence the reason for ins-outs.Once you had completed the 360 days, all visits for holidays included, you'll be required to pay the duties or take the vehicle out of the island.

Not sure on the situation regarding a foreigner importing a commercial vehicle but the age limit is 12 years.

Simple answer is... don't do it. The regulations always seem to work against you. It will probably cost you something in the region of 60% of the cars book value in import duties - and that's if they let you bring a commercial vehicle in - which is not clear. Even if the rules say you can, it will depend on the whim of the customs man on duty and his interpretation of the regulations.

Do I have to take it back to the UK or say if we went over to Turkey at least once a year would that be the same, ie for a holiday or to see friends.

Snıckers

Once 360 day limit is up,you'll either have to pay the duties and put trnc plates on your vrhicle or take it out the country.

Once out,the only way to re-enter is to pay the duties.

I hope thats clear enough for you.

mick sturbs posted her experiences regarding this law quite recently. Try to contact her, she's a genuine diamond. The guesses of other members, who haven't experienced first hand this problem, although well meaning, may not actually help.

Yes that was clearly me,then again, how do we know what the person's intentions are for bringing over commercial vehicle............ie.setting up own company??

as I said.............if only someone told me what I know today...............4 years ago!

however, you clearly don't know nothing about importing and by the sound of it don't wish to either.

still..................tomorrow's another day.

Vehicles seem to valued much higher here even though they use Glasses guide. My friend went to pay her duty last month on a renault import and the valuation she was given was ridiculous.

We brought our car over four years ago. We were mistakenly informed that we had one year to pay the duty, as it was (uk)taxed. When we came to pay, we were then told that we should have paid the duty before WE had been here a year.

All in all, it cost us about £10.000. It's now cost us more than our house did in UK.

I also believe you need a B licence for vans, trucks and buses and they dont give them to the British.

tsk tsk yorguzlu, once again you have a go at any one who even slightly disagrees with you. But if as you say, I "don't know nothing", it follows that I must know something

I imported my car in 2007, my friend imported a similar car the same month.

mine by Olaytrans, his driven over. I had no problems, he was at first refused, something to do with his "ins and outs" eventually this was reversed. No doubt things have changed. A few weeks ago a friend of ours, Rachel, aka Mick Sturbs, explained on here the problem she and husband Barry, had. I merely advised Snickers to seek the help of someone who KNOWS what they are talking about. Falling foul of the law here can prove expensive and daunting for ex pats. For what it's worth, as far as I recall, Rachel had to either pay tax or take the car out as her time was up, and that's her time for any imported car.

My posts are clear and factfull...........through own experience and not based on others.

they don't hate me in that office for nothing.

everyone's situation is different, hence the reason for ins-outs.A day makes all the difference. The first and most important thing everyone who is thinking of importing a vehicle must do is to get thier ins-outs checked out. However, officers are also allowed to use own initiative.

I did take this up to 1-help you guys,2-make little pocket money, but changed my mind after finding out no one wants to pay anything..................reminds me of the old days in uk,where a customer used to moan to pay £5 for breakfast but somehow managed to find £6 for packet of fags and god knows how much spared for pup.

anyhow, off to take my animals out for grazing and for me relaxing.

Trust me, buy one here, its a lot less hassle and you wont make any money on it. A 5 grand van will quickly become an 8 grand van, oh and you'l need a B plate, more Bo--ox to contend with..........

I would just like to say a big thanks for all the comments and info provided. I dont want to bring it over to start a business. If I decide not to bring it over ( we were going to drive through Europe and Turkey ) does anybody know a reputable car dealer were we might not get ripped off, he he he. It must be a diesel.
