I despair, we live in Malatya near a beauty spot and despite all protests Alsancack Belediyese conitinue to dump rubbish into the ravine. Do not say we as Brits should respect the culture here because the TC and Turkish residents are also up in arms. All protests fall on deaf stupid ears. What chance is there of educating people not to drop and leave rubbish if the Local authority is one of the main offenders?

Flossie ! at last a voice of reason.

Respecting local culture is a cop out, otherwise kids up chimneys and dog fighting would still be legal in the UK, time to get into the 21st century and respect the environment, stahding by for all the usual flack.

Coastal regions are an utter disgrace, and I'm not speaking of the beaches, those are just beyond belief. ...Karakum ,"the locals beach" today was awash with litter...broken bottles ..very disheartening...

MartinD41....Karakum beach has been like that for years, it was like it back in 1997 when I lived there. If theres no proper structure for getting rid of the rubbish then people will just dump it.

Big Mart what else do you want said, people have tried and its not working, far short of dragging the people to their s..t and then rubbing their noses in it or talking to the powers that be, what else is there. Obviously ex pats have tried and nobody listens. Education to the whole of Turkey and NC.

My posting to Martin is just pointing out how it has been in the past, wished I had the £millions to cure the problem. Also, read the posting properly like a conversation between 2 people and stop being sarcastic.

What about the amount of plastic bottle and metal can pollution along the roads? With the rise of population, thanks to influx from the less developed areas of Turkey, most don't give a toss about throwing things out of a car window. On the way to Lefkoşa, often, I witness bottles, bags & cans being thrown out of the car & van windows indiscriminately! Something which was a strict "NO! NO!" couple of decades ago.

I suggest you all have a closer look at the sides of the road, next time you drive to and from Lefkoşa. An amazingly large amount of metal and plastic litter can be observed all the way NON-STOP!

On my recent trip along the new Karpaz road, it was a tragicomic scene - Yes! the litter is already growing on both sides, and the dual carriageway had only been opened for few months! The scene is the same along Lefkoşa bypass.

There are big fine notices along the sides of dual carriageways in South Cyprus, and one would not see the kind of litter we are facing here

Woodspeckie, your talking holiday resorts. Perhaps I should have made it clearer and said, mainland turks need educating before they go abroad and especially to TRNC and before you try to ridicule me like you have done in the past and nitpick, I lived with a mainland turk in NC, so know a bit about their habits.

Also, I live near Margate in Kent and we get that treatment on our beach also everyday but in reverse, ours is done in the mornings, can't say say about Margate town though, thats another story.

They could start with patrols on the beach areas and fines for people who leave their rubbish behind,

olso signs in turkish and english stating this. As this usually hapens at the weekends so they could start with this first.

Turkish Cypriots are dirty people, why can't we just come out with. I've seen them chucking rubbish their next door neighbours garden, because if they can't see it themselves, then it's not there.

Zoony,The beach areas are only one problem ,the roadside littering and fly tipping are a major eyesore, lack of pride seems to be the overriding factor.....

Interestingly when I was in the south side in the 60's and then again in the 70's it was much the same as here but suddenly they got the message. It is not entirely litter-free now but about a hundred times better than here. How did they do it? I guess education is the answer. But of course here the locals think they already know everything and don't listen to foreigners....I'm not sure most of them even see the litter and know what we are on about. I despair but at least the weather is good.- They can't spoil that surely?

Whilst I, as a committed environmentalist, despair at the huge level of litter spread around the TRNC, I also appreciate - as a temporary resident - the fact I am a visitor and no amount of bemoaning locals and Turkish people on C44 will change their habits. Of some interest: I have lived/worked in Croatia, Spain, Libya, RoC, Gibraltar and a few other countries bordering the Med. The same problem of litter mind-set persits in these countries also. Back to the adage, "if you cannot stand the heat ---------". You can always leave here and return whence you came.

well done Tomsteel, that's really helpful. Let them drown in their sea of shite? Sometimes I think that's

no bad idea.

Not sure where you have lived or worked is of interest.

You know, UK is becoming the same. Rubbish dumped everywhere. Cyprus looks clean to us in comparision when we come over. Obviously I have noticed the rubbish as you have already discussed, just wanted to point this out too. Uk ain't as clean as it could be either. ( In many areas and growing. )

Thanks eagleyemonkey, but the UK is not on my list of best kept countries either..Probably due to the fact that is fast becoming anything but British...

MartinD41.....message 14 ...""Your talking Holiday resorts"... .I thought that's what NC was trying to promote itself as..

yeah, you'd think wouldn't you. I don't think the village of Karakum and its beach would ever be classed as a holiday resort. Somewhere to light a fire and have a midnight jaunt maybe. Good to read your thinking big and being positive though. Have they got rid of the animal pens where a certain race of people used to live with no water or electric?

Why not just ask the TCs what they want for/in their country and let them provide it? Pontificating on this forum will not clear the litter if they choose to drop it.

I agree the litter situation is very bad. But Tango, sweeping stereotypes like 'Turkish Cypriots are dirty people'

are just racist and untrue. Are you really saying all Turkish Cypriots are dirty?

I think what is true is poor organisation. I also think bigoz is right. I think education is needed and fines.

The latest survey by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) found a fall in the overall ‘cleanliness’ of Britain, with an increase in dog mess, tag graffiti and chewing gum. Cigarette butts and fast food wrappers are also a problem.

It found 187 councils had unsatisfactory levels of litter, while the rest were judged as merely satisfactory. Only ONE council in the whole country was considered good.

"I have lived/worked in Croatia, Spain, Libya, RoC, Gibraltar and a few other countries bordering the Med" is what I said. I also never mentioned Australia, Norway, Germany, Hong Kong, Brunei, Italy, France et al and some of them do border the Med, others do not. Enough pedantics on geography - the point is if the TCs want to litter, who are we, as guests in their country, to belittle them. No further posts on this subject from yours truly.

"At least the housing has improved"...,some say it has, some say it has not....Owning a house here is not part of my MO... When building standards emulate houses of the 21st century I might change my mind,or may be not ...

I get so fed up with people moaning about stuff that don't matter.

So what if there's a bitta litta?

If you don't want to see it stay at home and watch TV instead.

As my mother used to say, in a hundred years, who's going to care about the fact you dropped a bit of rubbish on the floor.

In a thousand years, it'll be an antique!

And it creates jobs for litter collectors, so less dole to pay.
