We will be visiting NC in Jan with my father who is wheelchair bound, we would like to show him some of the sites but the places we have been ourselves so far are not what you would call wheelchair friendly. I think we could do Bellapais at a push except for the cobbles, and he may be able to see some parts of the Abbey. Hilarion, Buffavento & Kantara are out of the question, as is Salamis Perhaps we will get round the harbour with difficulty. We haven't been to Girne Castle can anyone advise on this? We may try Nicosia and cross the border on foot, will this be achievable with wheelchair? Could we do the old town Famagusta? Any other ideas will be gratefully received. Obviously NC is still very scenic even from the confines of a car, but it will be nice to be able to get him out and push him around sometimes. Batterboy58

Batter "but it will be nice to be able to get him out and push him around sometimes" sounds a bit cruel... ;¬)

Not cruel at all, just want him to be able to enjoy the holiday as much as everyone else wherever possible. And not be confined to his chair all the time.

Have to agree with Starry, you will struggle at the castle as I think its up quite a few steps just to get into the entrance. Unfortunately NC isn’t a very wheel chair friendly place. You might be ok round the harbour and parts of Famagusta should be ok. You could drive up to St Hilarion and have a look at the view without going it which is possible I think. I am sure you would be ok pushing him into some of the casinos as well, if he’s into that!

Hi Batterboy8, You should be able to access the harbour in Girne if you park near the Ataturk statue. Famagusta is also ok, park inside the walls in the small car park on the left. Guzelurt is fine for a wheelchair. Drive down to the Karpaz, lovely drive and the monasty has a ramp from memory. Hope this helps. The Butlers wife

The general condition of the pavements and roads would make a simple journey somewhat difficult. Even if you do find a nice stretch of wheelchair friendly road then it probably has obstructions like cars parked in your way meaning your pushed out into the road. As January is likely to be wet and muddy then as long as you prepare for the conditions then you may be ok, but it will be a challenge. Good luck

We managed Bellapais and also the old town of Nicosia with my mum-in-law in a wheelchair. Nicosia is not brilliant but there are some ramps and things though you will often find cars parked across them. We had a motorised wheelchair which really helped.

Thoughts that might not be too hard: Some areas in Nicosia like the Great Han some of the Mosques in Lefkosa (including the area near them) and Farmagusta etc. St Barnabas, maybe Vouni and Soli areas too To get to Kyrenia Harbour you can use the two ends of the crescent one near the castle and the other near the Dome Sections of Famagusta near the old walls Its a while since I went to Salamis and it did strike me as work but not impossible for someone who is less able bodied. Just don't try to do too much is my norma recomendation to clients who need assistance.
