Can anyone recommend a good honest garage for a brake pad inspection/replacement?

I live in Lapta, so distance to the garage should be less than 7klm from there!

The car is a Honda CR-V

Try Ziggy , his garage is in Alsancak . If you go along the main road from Girne to Lapta turn off at the Merit Crystal Cove turning and his garage is a couple of hundred yards down on the right . Good luck .

Ziggy has my vote too. He doesn't make women feel idiots either when they take their car in and always explains what needs to be done! Prices very good too.

Ziggy is very good and honest, I've also used Nippon Parts in Lefkosa in the industrial estate, very good, honest and good rates.

I went to Safer garage on lower Lapta road, his English is not good, but better than my Turkish, he got me to speak to someone on phone, nice guy. Towed my car in, found fuel blockage, new filter and pipework, plus replacement battery. 250YTL.

MartinD41 I think the answer is no, they do not, at least here where the hourly rate for a qualified? mechanic is less than the UK. and it is hot, and the beer is cheap!

Ziggy sounds like he de man, I don't suppose everybody has the practical ability to turn their hand to DIY home mechanics and surely when it comes to Brakes they are really not the best part of a car to suddenly see if you can hack being an amateur mechanic what a pathetic post ! ........

I believe changing brake pads should be done by a mechanic. If you are good at DIY, after seeing it and trying with another mechanic, you can do it.

Anyways its cheaper and safer by a mechanic.

I also wanted to share a video.

This guy has no arms, and can change the brake pads.

I know Ziggy well, in preference I have used Ferac at Karaolanoglu for years. Ferac is conscientious and honest, no chat, no side show, just reliable, reasonably priced and honest, as are his staff.

Hi , re msg 17 , I dont know who the post was aimed at , but this moron would put safety and the expertise of a qualified mechanc before money anyday , that's why there are Mechanics , for people like me who won't play around with something they don't understand .

I stick by my remarks, "Moron" eh ! I think you by your stupid outburst you have shown all and sundry what a complete and utter tosser you are !! Is it true the best thing to come out of The Channel Islands is The Ferry ???Thank you for all the sensible posts, I think this person is just a sad case who is missing his homeland too much.

I think the point is that when brake pads are replaced, which perhaps many who are not experienced mechanics are well capable of doing, falls short of having the experienced eye to check that the pads are the precise ones required and not a set of the many cheap, ill fitting ones on the market, that discs are properly secure and not dangerously scored, that brake cylinders and pipes do not leak or are worn to the point of potential rupture etc etc. If I fitted brake pads myself instead of watching a mechanic do these things and admire their skills, each time I drove over the mountain pass to/from Lefkosa I would not be thinking of the money saved but experiencing squeaky bum time ! The old adages "there is no substitute for experience" and "Jack of all trades, master of none" comes to mind when it come to vehicle roadworthiness.

msg27.."Do they have cars in Guernsey" Yes too many.

Simbas, 20 years building and racing Caterham 7's gave me plenty of experience in brake/systems.

deputydawg...I was not suggesting that anyone with no experience at all should tackle something they don't fully understand....

Msg 19, and 29 agree totally, I watched the video posted by martinD41 and spotted six errors made by the 'mechanic' I would not want him any where near my brakes! I have not used Ziggy but have always heard good reports about his work.

The job was carried out by Ziggy with no drama. I went into his garage at 14:15 and was out again by 15:55, the young mechanic even pressure washed the outside of the car after the work was completed. I watched Ziggy carry out the inspection and was shown the worn pads (front & back). He explained all I needed to know in very good English.

He phoned his supplier for a price of the new pads. I was informed of the price of the replacement pads and agreed with him that he could continue with the work required to replace the pads, before he went and ordered them (The new pads were couriered from Girne in 25min). I would without a doubt recommend his services and certainly knows his stuff..

All completed for less than £100!!

If you are in the Ozankoy area then try the little garage on the corner in the village. Looks like a dump and only one of the brothers speaks good English - they do the best job I have ever seen and at the best price as well. Cured my oil leak, that had been "cured" eight months before by your peoples choice on this thread! The big thing with them is simple, if they can not do the job they say so straight away - no fiddling around and ending up with half a job at twice the price. Only adverse comment I can make is that you need to cover your seats before you take your car there - or make sure you put it in for a deep clean afterwards, these boys have yet to learn about seat covers when they are in and out of the car in there working (oily) kit.

Can not give them a high enough recommendation for any work on a vehicle.
