Do they guarantee that it will keep dogs out completely?

It wont keep them out if you forget to close it!

What exactly do you want? What type of dog are you trying to keep out? Strays dont usually go into houses. I had a wrought gate (local blacksmith) fitted to the front door, so I could leave it open for air without the dogs getting OUT onto a busy road. Its about waist height - you might want higher if you are trying to stop big dogs jumping in and clears the floor by about 4 inches, which is only just small enough to stop a daschund puppy squeezing under!

I did once have a dog (cross between a Cyprus terrier and a monkey I decided) which could actually climb up and over the decorative curls of a high (about5 feet) wrought iron garden gate and had to line it with chicken wire to stop him, but that was pretty unusual.

Alternatively you might think about a full height strong wire mesh screen door, which would also deter cats and snakes. Maybe the people who make fly screens could do something, or a local builder.

Our Cypriot dogs can clear a stairgate from a standing start our English one never has mastered that art! So now the defunct stairgates await the visit of grandchildren

Another alternative is to have a stable door. I did this for a back door - also had the top half fitted with independently closing bars and glass "window" so I get more air in summer and light in winter into what was a rather dark and stuffy room and of course even the largest and most athletic dogs cant get in or out as the case may be.
