Has anyone else had there house number on their site changed by the Beledeye? The Beledeye says that all sites are being changed. Is this usual practice???? The site is about 5 years old. We are in Bahceli. Any clarification very welcome.

In England it is normal practice for a builder to allocate a plot number so the building can be identified. Once a site is developed and at least partly occupied and postal deliveries commence the Post Office and/or Local Authority allocated a postal number. It is not so long ago that there werent any house numbers (and often not street names!) in N. Cyprus. Cant remember how long but not much more than five years. In my street of established houses someone (presumably the Beledeye) came along and painted numbers on each house. Later someone (I believe the Beledeye acting for the Post Office) affixed a different number which became the official postal address.

Blimey, did this effect your deeds or just a postal address? Thank you for the information.

Not just the numbers. The road where I am posting from has been signposted with 3 different names and prior to that when not sign posted it had a further name. The authorities, and utilities, plus the likes of Digiturk, Internet Service provider, etc all have conflicting records. To renew a driving license for example is a nightmare and bills are regularly misconstrued and inaccurate. Apparently they use the names of some very minor local celebrity as a street sign and when their star very quickly wanes the street name is changed. I often read on this forum the expression "you couln't make it up" but they can, time and time again !

Does that mean you have to go to the police with the pink or blue book and get that changed too?

Ours has also changed, first we were plot numbers, then we had numbers for the census and last week we got new numbers and a street name ( Esentepe Belediyesi ) We are not changing our postal address yet ( we do have a PO box ) until our driving licences run out as these are the only proof of address that we have.

All the houses in our road were re-numbered before the last census, but the electricity bill still comes with the old house number. I changed the number in our pink cards and when next we went for residency, the police officer queried it but then initialled the change.

We had a street number for the front door and a different street number / street name for the side door at the last census.

Message 3 Good point janjin. In my case I bought the house before there were street names or house numbers, so the Deeds just say "Ozankoy" but it would be worth checking with a Solicitor for later purchases. Dont knock Northern Cyprus too much. It was British Telecom who ignored several notifications of the postal number and persisted in sending bills to the plot number and the Post Office who also ignored notications of change of address tothe number they had allocated and returned the undelivered bills to British Telecom who then cut me off for not paying a bill I hadnt received and created several kinds of havoc. Then to top it I covered the plot number with a piece of white paper with the postal number written in 8inch high black letters stuck to the door with red tape, and the PO returned ALL my mailto sender saying "no such number".

Our street has changed names and the house have different numbers. What we did was DO NOTHING Neither ambulance nor police could find us via the first or second name, so what was the point. Our Driving licences would have needed changing so why bother. In theory it made our contract on the house wrong (DON'T EVEN GO THERE!!). and the subject doesn't even come up at residency time. If it ain't broke don't mend it.

O'h dear Lord, don't tell me we're going to change again. Last Census we had a nice young man who was working for one of the banks but who was doing it for some extra cash. He stayed about half an hour and when he left we were given his card (in case you want to change banks) and a card for his Uncle who ran a car hire and a water business. Don't you just luv 'em.
