excellent reportage of the ins and outs of the cyprus talks:

the two moderate leaders prancing from chapter to chapter

like water boatmen on a diet...

the good wishes of the international community,

and for our friends in the south, unfurling the 1960 agreement

how strange then that ap, reuters, the bbc and herald tribune

all report that the general mood is pessimistic and that hopes

for a single cyprus appear to dwindle with each passing day:

indeed a recent survey among cypriots reveals that only 20%

now expect any reunification deal

the reality is a vast chasm remains between the two sides

that cannot be papered over by a whole library of facebooks

what to do about 100.000 turkish settlers/new cypriots?

where are the security guarantees if the island is "demilitarized"?

how to presevent one segment of society being dominated by the other?

so implausible does it all look one is justified in asking:

"just who will gain what by hyping it up"?

Andre - that's what it is, Hype. No one knows what will happen yet. It's all conjecture.

hi bill,

yes but it is far more that that:

by carrying on with this game you are scaring villa people witless

quite unecessarily but in step with a revanchist agenda,

since as "suzanne" stated recently in a revealing phrase

"we want to get north cyprus back" (I'm sure they do)

"for all cypriots" (sic)

re-unification would be bad news for expats, cricket aside

and a catastrophe for the local population any fool can see that,

and I'm sure the brave turkish cypriots will resist being bulldozed into it

however I do appreciate as mere foreigners

(but can british people ever really be "foreigners")

we/I should shut up and get back to the vital issues:

eg how many cans of efes can you drink before falling down

and why it is so difficult to get bbc1 in cyprus

Suz,

I think you should be crowned Miss Quoted, seeing as so many people just can't stop quoting you. Still, apart from the checkout girls at Orphan Annies you're probably the only contact from the other side they have.

quite correct suzanne and pike it was a misquotation, my apologies,

you actually referred to the whole island not just the north

the original reference was from the thread tc's in the south 9.11.08

suzanne msg 41 used the phrase "get the island back"

andre msg 42 replied "I love your phrase "get the island back"

a freudian slip methinks"

I'm sure you're right: better to have a whole island rather than half an island

yes kay,

and I once lived in elgin avenue too...

but it was a different world when the staues were shipped out

greece was part of the ottoman empire with which

britain was later to enjoy a cosy relationship...

mainly in order to keep russia out of persia (eh?!!?)

but elements of the royal navy and the likes of byron

supported the greek people's drive for independence

it was sad that melina mercouri kicked the bucket

before she got her dream

nonetheless I did not really mean those marbles,

more the marbles when one loses touch with reality
