all you scooter and bike riders don't forget the new helmet law starts tomorrow with I understand some pretty hefty fines for transgressors. Scootex still has stock if you need one

As usual. ex-pats will be targetted by the local stazi and the locals will be ignored, you will see them all rideing about with their kids on the seat with them along with the missus and a few chickens and a load of veg, it doesnt matter because his brouther/ uncle/ grandad/ sister is in the police, what a joke.

I was told that people riding quad bikes and those on bikes under a certain cc don't have to wear a helmet, does that mean they will bounce if they come off at speed or just that they have thicker heads.

As I was running from Lemar Catalkoy towards Bo Thai almost on the hard shoulder coming towards me was a motor bike, no helmets , with 3 adults squeezed on.

Might sound a stupid question, but is there a maximum number..........................

Why expect anyone to take any notice of this "law" when there is little regard for any of the other traffic laws, including speeding, seat belts, mobile phones, etc.

I think a few of you have got it wrong the police have not been targeting the Brits who should know better anyway 3 Cypriots in today after being warned and the laws is All motorcycle and scooter riders must wear helmets what ever size of machine also I understand that no child under the age of 12 is allowed to be a passenger but not sure if that was enacted in the new regulations

Does that mean if you ride a motorcycle you have to wear a helmet on your right arm or on your head?

Our TC friend was stopped and fined two years ago for not wearing a helmet, he went out and bought one but of course does not wear it, it remains on the handle bars!

When it was last discussed, I understood that Take Away scooters were going to be exempt, is that still the case. They really are cretinous idiots. Jumping the lights to get across the bye-pass to Ezics Premier is the last game 3 of them were seen playing. One of these days it will be their "last game" and of course it won't be their fault!!

Why werent the police out in force yesterday giving warnings only - it being first day of helmet law???? On my foray into Girne yesterday almost without exception every motorbike rider had no helmet! I would have expected police at every junction making their prescence felt and warning riders - but no, not one to be seen!

I know as a fact that this forum is read by Cypriot Turkish civil servants including police officers. This thread is once more an invitation to target expats. Well done, some posters here. Better relations between the locals and us, eh?

Scootex

Could I ask if your helmets are DOT European standard as I read on here that if you buy Chinese helmuts they are not up to standard. If you have any helmets remaining could I ask the price of an open face with a visor please as need to purchase one asap.

msg 27,

"This thread is once more an invitation to target expats."

Hans, are you suggesting that expats aren't already targeted? As to who reads these threads, either we are being targeted or we aren't. If the truth hurts perhaps the readers of these posts should prove us wrong!

@ msg 29: Vaughan, I do not feel targeted at all. I have built very good relations with Cypriot Turks in several aspects of TRNC life, especially in local tourism. I'm regularly consulted about medieval history in Cyprus and treated with utmost respect. In short: I don't moan and enjoy life in TRNC for 100%.

I certainly don't want to belong to the group of expats seeing corruption etc behind every tree. And I DO think that the hundreds of complaints about everything TRNC on this bulletin board do NOT help to make us expats more respected and more welcome with the locals.

Is there really so little positive to write about life in TRNC?! I pity the people who can't ever see the bright side of life in TRNC.

I write this message in Holland - I'll be glad to be back in TRNC tomorrow!

Hi Pembecik .DOT (dept of transport USA) are not acceptable they must have the european standard which ours are, they also have the ACU gold star which means they are eligible to be used on the UK race tracks that are governed by the Auto Cycle Union .

unfortunatly I have almost sold out of open face helmets but I do have a stockist in Girne who still has a few left prices start at £45.00 but quite honestly think a full face helmet is better and safer with prices from £55.00.

If you want to give me a ring or email with your size please call 05428551176 or email phil.chappell@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks for your interest

Regards

Phil

Last night we had to turn around in Alsancak as the road was blocked following an accident involving a van and a motorbike/scooter, there seemed to be some people lying in the road and it looked pretty awful. We went up a side road and as we turned right at the top we saw, just, a motor scooter coming towards us, no lights on, two men on it neither of them wearing helmets, we could so easily have knocked them down.

There is little point in introducing laws if they are not going to be enforced, whatever nationality you are, how many more people have to be killed or injured before something changes.

Hans'

coming from the country that gave us the hated Gatsos you should not be introducing an us and them element.

If it's against the law it shouldn't matter what race people are.

My own perception from the last two days is that things are a touch lax.

Hans,

You seem to be suggesting that some expats are paranoid and that they are not being targeted. You also imply that by suggesting they are being targeted will somehow make it happen. Are the authorities here so vindictive?
