Those rules might be OK for the UK but here there appears to be no easy way of making a shop keeper follow even the most basic consumer rights found in the rest of the EU. The most serious breach I've heard of was someone who opened a pack of Gold Fassl and discovered that one bottle was half empty. The shopkeeper wouldn't accept that he hadn't drunk it.

Mal, Gold Fassl screw tops do sometimes leak.... but how would the shop owner know any different? I would conjecture that if you think this is a 'serious breach' of consumer rights you are seriously in need of some chill-pills!

Omaintenance, I find myself going back regularly for more supplies, so no extra time or fuel, and would be fair and only ask for half a bottle as compensation.

As an ex shop keeper, when anything was returned I would, based on the price, smile and exchange or replace as it was good customer relations practise. If only the traders here were to follow the same principle they would retain customer loyalty.

No groucho. When they were coming back with goods that had been used and they had got fed up or which they had broke because they were too stupid to use it is very hard to be eunthistic. I was just trying to point out that there are benifits to be had with good customer relations. You must have missed that point.

I must admit, I bought a pack of lacal smarties, sellotaped together,'buy one, get one free'. When I seperated them at home, one pack was nearly full, the other totally empty. It did make me smile,

Pat, compared to what you ( and I) have been called in the past the term old fart is quite complimentary isn't it.
