The Cyprus negotiations process has entered a new phase. President Derviş Eroğlu and the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Dimitris Christofias have met as part of the ongoing intensified Cyprus negotiations process.

Although a full day of talks were planed it only lasted 2 hours.

The leaders came together at the residence of the UN Secretary General’ Special Representative for Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim at 10am in the morning.

Making a statement upon his return to the Presidential Palace, President Derviş Eroğlu said they discussed the method of how the give and take process will take place.

‘On Friday we will officially start the give and take process,’ said Eroglu.

Also speaking to reporters at the end of today’s meeting, the UN Special Advisor Alexander Downer said that today’s meeting had focused on working out the procedures for the process leading up to the next tripartite meeting in October.

Asked if the government crisis in South Cyprus had been discussed during today’s meeting and whether it was why the meeting lasted for only an hour, Downer said that the issue had not been discussed within the context of the meeting.

He also pointed out that the United Nations did not engage in politics on either side of the island.

President Derviş Eroğlu and the Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias have covered all of the negotiation chapters over the past 15 meetings held within the framework of the intensified period.

5 more meetings are scheduled before the tripartite meeting which will be held in New York on the 30th and 31st of October.
