If you are using multimax connection, you do not need a vpn, you just run bbc iplayer and it works! magic

I downloaded My Private Network.com and watch the lot for £5 a month (I know that's not free) but it's worth every penny. I got in a bit of a muddle trying to down load (but that's just me!!) A guy in UK then downloaded on to my PC by remote control and it's been absolutely perfect ever since.

Morning Coffer,

Sorry, to hear that Extend didn't / couldn't sort out the 'issue' ..

My Vpn works perfectly - but 'someone' is port blocking and it is quite easy for an ISP to fix.. if they WANT to..

As we can see, there's now ISP's who do realise that this is an important service ( no extra charge) for ex-pats and I guess if they don't want to help you, there's other ISPs that move with the times.

If leylandlad's solution works, let us know...

Expat Shield is one VPN option. It is free but it is also 'advertisment supported'. It can be downloaded from here

http://download.cnet.com/Expat-Shield/3000-2092_4-75211377.html

There are many alternatives to Expat Shield. There is Mark's free VPN service that does not have any advertising and then there are many companies that offer paid for VPN services. Personally I use a paid for service from http://www.vpnuk.net/ and use Mark's free one as a back up and to troubleshoot. vpnuk.net are not the cheapest service around but they are pretty relaible imo. There are many many pay for options.

So you pays your money, or not and takes your choice.

In addition to our configuration free tvMAX service for watching some UK TV channels, we have also started to offer full fledged VPN service to our customers:

server: vpn.multimaxcyprus.com

username: tvmax

password: tvmax

The service is currently available and *free* for all multimax customers.

Just to add since moving my internet supply to multimax my need for a VPN is reduced alot but not entirely. Multimax automatically routes traffic to certain specific desitinations, like BBC sites and ITV sites such that it looks like you are in the UK. For all other traffic it routes it normally and this is how I like it. My understanding, which may be wrong, is that Nethouse routes all traffic for customers who ask for it such that it looks like it is comming from the UK. This is not efficent in my personal opinion and not what I want from my net connection. I like the way multimax only route specific traffic automatically through their VPN and then I can use my own paid for VPN to choose if I want to look like I am in the UK or not for all other sites. This works well for me. For sites like BBC I always want it to look like I am in the UK. For other sites I want to be able to choose if I look like I am in the UK or not. Multimax with VPN service allows this.

Now in light of Kemal's post in msg 21 it may bee that I can stop using my paid for VPN service all togeather and may soon do so. For the specific sites like BBC and ITV, my connection multimax connection will just look like I am in the UK without me doing anything. For other sites I can choose to use the free multimax VPN or not depending on where I want to look like I am comming from.

One other thing I want to mention is that I personaly try and not use VPN service unecessarily, if it is a free one or a paid for one. For example if I am downloading from say Sky Go, I will connect to VPN, start the download, pause the download, disconnect from the VPN, download the content, then reconnect to the VPN to watch it. I could download the content through the VPN, but this just places unecessary load on the VPN resource, as you only need to look like you are in the UK to start the download and when you play it. In between you do not.

Ki Leylandlad,I am interested in your free VPN if you could please email me :_ dalytez@aol.com

A friend of mine has just paid £12 per month for VPN only to find it kept buffering - hence he cancelled it straightaway.

Also, where can I find Mark's VPN details please . Thanks

Hi Her Indoors

As I understand it Leylandlad is suggesting expat shield, which you can download from the link I gave above. If I have got that wrong Leylandlad, appologies in advance.

For Mark's try emailing him on mark.smyth@uktvabroad.com

Just one other thing re your friends. It may be that the problem your friend had was the VPN service itself but it is also possible that it was their own internet connection that was the limiting factor. To 'stream' (rather than download) TV connetent using a VPN both the VPN AND your own internet connection have to be able to achieve certain sustained minmum throughput speeds. If your net connection is not able to do this then no VPN service no matter how expensive or cheap, and 12pm sounds expensive, will help you.

Leylandlad both hotspot shield and expat shield are 'made' by the company Anchor Free as I understand it and they both offer a form of free VPN service but they are slightly different. My understanding is that hotspot shield would make you look like you were in the USA and is designed primarily for USA users of wifi hotsopts offering more 'security' in using such connections. Expat shield will make it look like you are in the UK and is designed primarily to allow UK expats to view sites like the BBC iPlayer when outside the UK.

The source site for expat shield is

http://expatshield.com/

The cnet link I gave above is the same program, just that cnet link has things like 'user comments' and 'number of downloads' and 'ranking' of the program itself and so on.

Maybe I am wrong and am missing something here but if not then all that Leylandlad would be emailing people would be a link to download either hotspot shield, which I think will make you look like you are in america and not work for watching bbc iplayer but would for watching USA restricted content or for expat shield that will make it look like you are in the UK.

So maybe leylandlad is emailing people something 'special' and a link to it has not already been posted here in this thread or people just keep asking him to email a link to something that is already here in the thread after it has already been posted on the thread.

Who knows ?

Yes definitely you can have the free vpn services to watch bbc i player. As there are many vpn providers enabling users with the same. I have found something related for you...

I would recommend you to check Tunnel Bear VPN Service : http://www.bestvpnservice.com/providers/165/tunnel-bear-vpn.html

HERE we go, a new member joins to 'recommend' a service that doesn't address the OP's question ..

It was for a FREE service.. not a paid for one...

The 'free service' would allow less than an hours UK TV with a 500 Mb allowance :(

There are service that do exactly what they do on the tin - are totally free and unlimited usage

(cont)

For users in Cyprus I recommend you use an ISP that doesn't block my free VPN - or one that has one built in..

Those wanting to use my free UK vpn can contact me using my profile details

I DON'T recommend the shield progs as they also hijack your browser as well as installing a VPN...

Just a quick update, my VPN to 6m server is now up and running again, thanks to Erolz and 6m. Thank you very much for your time and patience guys I'm very grateful.

I will be renewing in Dec and it will be with a company who offer a VPN connection as part of the service. Multimax is looking very good, anyone in the Esentepe area connected and can give some feedback as to its performance?

.. but it was down to ErolZ ! There's only so much I can do remotely ;)

I have got someone else up and running - that was a software firewall issue..
