Well, I would like to know this too. My friend is growing a plant from a stone and so far it looks good, about 50cm tall, but she also does not know anything about it

Yes you can grow mangos here and the trees are sold here, growing from a stone though does usually mean the plant will not bear fruit as it will be sterile. The garden center next to the Bellapais traffic lights sells them and i think Gardens of Babel. they need careful placing though.

Avocados should also be grafted to produce a more edible fruit, unlike the horrible things grown locally...

We have four mango (apple mango) growing from seed and I have some more seed to plant next year (honey mango from Pakistan) the former from Kenya. Can't understand why they should be sterile as the route along the railway track from Mombasa to Nairobi is littered with mango trees grown from seed dropped by track workers. I have also tried avocado and they have not been good but last year got some delicious avocados from Lefke and have three pips growing and they are now over four feet tall. Have guava, custard apple and pawpaw growing in the garden and apart from the custard apple have had fruit from the others and masses of passion fruit also. Just give everything a try, I have tried macadamia but not with any success.

Gerionimo,

"Mango fruit from seeds is never the same as the mother tree's fruit. So the seed out of a great tasting fruit will likely produce a tree yielding horrible tasting fibrous fruit. The only certain way to be sure you'll have tasty fruit is to propagate (by grafting, and in some cases cloning) an existing particular, individual tree (DNA-wise) whose quality is proven.

The odds of a seed producing worthwhile fruit are very, very small. Like one in a hundred million."

See here and many other sites, its the same for avocados,
