Perhaps you should forget about asking "an educated British person", and ask for "someone who has good English grammar and communication skills" - that may do the trick.

İsmet Bey;

I know many "educated" British who would not be able to give you the directions from London Bridge to Parliament Square! And what about the educated British solicitors, business managers and even teachers who make horrible spelling mistakes...

Just to make it more clear; "British" does not necessarily mean English or even Scottish or Welsh

"I need to write a strong personal statement for my university application and obviously i can't do it on my own"

Should you be considering going to University then? Perhaps the time to apply is when you can do it yourself?

Big Oz,

I thought you were implying that usually foreigners have better skills in English

I am sorry,, Cypriot Student, but Bradus is probably right. I assume the teaching at your proposed University is in English and they need to see if your English is good enough to benefit from the course.

If someone else helps you , the University would think that your English was better than it really is and then you might not be able to understand the lectures and would have wasted your money.

I dont know if they still do, but Universities used to have a preparatory English course for students who needed to improve their English before they could get the best from the lectures. If you are uncertain of the level of your English you could enquire about this.

However the grammar of your question was correct - but not the punctuation. Take a deep breath, write our your statement with what you want to say. Then do something else for a while. Come back to your statement and concentrate on making sure you have...................continued

continued from message 9

concentrate on making sure you have got first the grammar, then the spelling than the punctuation correct. It might be better than you think!

Keep your sentences short and start a new paragraph for each item ,

Good luck

Ooops! Third line from bottom should of course have been ", then the puncutation" !

That shows the reason for taking a break, then checking your work - you see mistakes more easily! Pity there isnt a draft facility on this Board!

You should prepare your own application, how else is the University concerned going to be aware of your capabilities. You'll be asking English speaking students to sit your exams for you next!

First of all, even some people in England writes personal statement with the help of the agencies.

Some people don't even know about the rules you have to follow while writing a personal statement and judge!

I know so many people who paid 1.000 TL for a personal statement; Which is waste of money.

I forgot to add this on my first comment-I'M THE ONE WHO IS GOING TO WRITE IT BUT IT HAS TO BE CHECKED(Not written) BY SOMEONE WHO IS PROFESSIONAL.That's the reason i have said ''I can't do it on my own'' NOT because i have a poor grammer skills.

I believe that my english is good enough to study in UK.Otherwise i couldn't have several qualifications with high grades.

Finally, I have a great person who can help me with that. Thanks to people who wished luck.

I have done a mistake by writing ''Any educated britsh person who can write a personal statement?'' as a topic. It should have been ''Any educated british person (who is professional in english language) who can help to check my personal statement''

Actually you mean "poor grammar skills" not "poor grammer skills".

I do not think much of a University anywhere which would be influenced by a professionally produced application form - they should be judging the student's abilities and potential, not how much he could pay for someone to fill a form in for him. However I know there are people who will prepare C.V.s and I suppose it is the same thing and I am counselling perfection.

If you have a University entrance level I.Q. you are clever enough to work out for yourself what you should say in the Statement!

We'll help you if you like. I am English and my husband is a Turkish Cypriot. Don't be discouraged regards your level of English, just yesterday I was listening to dictaphone of my husbands history lessons from when he was studying for his degree in the states. He used to record his lessons and use a dictionary after class to figure out the bits he didn't understand. Ten years later he has a phd, and as much as I hate to admit it, his english is much better than mine. You can e-mail us at arca_ahmet@yahoo.com. Soraya

As i said before the topic should have been like this *Is there any educated british person (who is professional in english language) who can help me to check my personal statement'' And i didnt ask for someone who could fill it for me for cash!

Anyway i have found a professional person who can check it for me.I ain't looking for anyone anymore.

Cypriot student,

Allowances are made for English being your second language so don't worry too much. They just want to be sure you will have a reasonable understanding. It is true that there are many professionally produced application forms but my experience is that most universities are aware of this and now do extensive questioning in an attempt to discover if you are using such. Students that struggle with the language are given lots of support from attending summer school, prior to the start of term or individual language support. Judging from your posts you will need little support, so go ahead and send off your personal statement.

Content is just as important as grammar. So be yourself and other than a spell check hand in your own work. From my experience, those that need a little help are given it freely. However those that hand in work which is evidently not theirs will be penalised.

Good Luck

Lets make it clear, the thing is the topic written in a wrong way.I'm not looking for someone to write it or fill anything for me and i would never let anyone to write it for me anyway.Because it's about me.I just needed a pro to check it for me thats it.Nothing else and I'm proud of my english level.

But some people like to post negative comments.

I have found someone who can help me.

Thanks for wishes x

Good luck, and ignore any mean spirited posts - your English is good, and can only improve - just remember - grammar is spelled with two a's...
